$998 to Say Hello to Dolly? That’s the Price for Some Front Row Seats
The New York Times ^ | October 8, 2017 | Michael Paulson

Broadway is breaking another price barrier.

Producers of “Hello, Dolly!” are now charging $998 for front row seats at many performances between late November and mid-January, when Bette Midler leaves the cast, according to a review of ticket prices on the Telecharge website. With fees, each of those seats will cost $1,009.

The price is a record for a non-holiday performance on Broadway. “Hamilton” is the only show that has reached that level before, charging $998 for some seats during the Thanksgiving and Christmas weeks last year.

The high “Dolly” ticket, which is for weekend performances, reflects strong demand to see Ms. Midler’s Tony-winning turn before her run ends on Jan. 14. And the front row provides an opportunity for fans to be quite close to her: She performs the title song on a passerelle, a walkway that arcs in front of the stage, and she often reaches out toward audience members, sometimes shaking their hands.

Rick Miramontez, a spokesman for “Hello, Dolly!” producer Scott Rudin, declined to comment on the show’s premium prices.

Although $998 for a Broadway ticket remains exceptional, prices overall are rising: thus far this season, the average ticket price on Broadway is $116. Last season it was $109.....

Of course, the nyt will omit the fact that this is yet another sign of the booming Trump economy.

Especially the $10,000 for a Springsteen ticket later in the article. I wouldn’t leak on him if he was on fire.

Tickets for entertainment are totally out of whack, and I think that’s one of the reasons for the revolt against the NFL and entertainment in general, we’ve had enough.

I looked up Bette Midler’s age - she'll be 72 in just over a month.

And, according to her bio, she is only 5'1” tall.

Speaking about Springsteen being on fire, here are some actual Springsteen lyrics:

“Hey little girl is your daddy home?

Or did he go and leave you all alone, mmm hmmm.

I gotta bad desire

Whoa whoa whoa I’m on fire.”

The GREED of the Big Theatre industrial complex is sickening. I suggest federal intervention on ticket prices. No show ticket should cost more than $50.

Any price higher is exploitation of those who love the arts.

Cultural growth and appreciation of music, dance and drama is essential to society, I think we all agree on that. Therefore, why should the wealthy few get to enjoy seeing and experiencing these performances while the poor have to go to the balcony?

So sick of thespian privilege.

I don’t think it’s a sign of a booming economy when elite Broadway productions are priced way above middle class patrons.

The rich need to prove they are rich, what better way than $1000 tickets to a hit broadway show.

Frankly, I wouldn’t walk across the street for a free ticket to see Bette Midler. She always sings flat and spent her career copying her betters - Sophie Tucker, Patti Page, The Andrews Sisters, etc. She’s a fag hag.

If people pay it, then that’s the correct price.

So if YOU owned a theater company you’d charge only $50 out of the goodness of your heart even though you could get 20x that (for the good seats)? Iow, you’d deliberately cut your profit by a significant margin in the name of “fairness?”

Better Midler hates Trump. I live 70 miles from NYC & used to see shows in NYC sometimes. No more, except for the Christmas Pageant at Radio City Music Hall.
