The original camp was intended to be used by workers in the Third Reich - and was said to be the Nazi leader's idea of a 'dream resort'

A Nazi holiday camp built by Adolf Hitler before World War II broke out has been turned into a luxury resort - boasting apartments worth more than £500,000.

The Prora resort on Rugen, a German island in the Baltic Sea, had been left abandoned for decades after building work was halted in 1939.....

My oldest son took the train to Prora on one of his trips to Germany. Mostly walked around, and took a bunch of pictures. The same day he also visited Peenemunde-Historisch-Technisches Museum, which is in the same area.

Interestingly the paper doesn’t mention how the East German commies uses the resort for 40 years only changing the logos

Thanks 2ndDivisionVet. The last time I looked at pics of the place, it was still pretty dreadful. Glad that someone finally got the nerve, and the capital, to redevelop it. In its time it was billed as being the longest building on Earth or something like that.

We visited Prora for the past three summers when we stayed nearby at Binz. Which is about a 40 minute walk on the beach.

They've thrown a lot of money into it to make it look good, but at the end of the day it still has that dreadful inorganic rectilinear look the Germans are so good at.

Nazi idea of fun was to have communal gatherings

Every one would get up same time, eat in a mess hall

Be subject to several hours of propaganda

Watch propaganda movies in theatre

Eat together, then go to bed at same time

A real Nazi Club Med......

Can’t help but notice everyone is dressed for chilly weather at the beach.

Does the Baltic ever warm up enough for a comfortable swim?

The time of day was sunset. The torch walk is actually a children’s event organized by the hotel staff. They do it once a week during the summer. We missed doing it the other years so I was really keen to finally get it done.

I had many great swims.
Stay active.
Takes only a few minutes of active swimming to acclimatize.

If not you will slowly freeze.

Most all the people I seen in the water were swimming or playing.

Those who don’t soon leave the water.

Places on Germany's Baltic sandy shoreline are very shallow, and somewhat warm; also dangerous, as the tide comes in too fast to get back to the beach. (!)

I would love to see that. For those who don’t know, Peenemunde is where the V weapons, the V-1 and V-2, were developed. At some level Wernher von Braun made his name here, then ended up in the US as an important integral part of our space program.
