Why the Southern Kitchen team lives off of Publix subs, a.k.a. Pub Subs, all summer long

Along with a great shopping experience, Publix also prides itself on the food it makes fresh daily in the store. Some of us grab a box of fried chicken for an easy dinner and others pick up some great sweet tea for a get-together. But the most popular item in the Publix deli is the sub sandwiches.

Appropriately nicknamed “Pub Subs,” these sandwiches hold a special place in our hearts. Most of us remember our very first Pub Sub, and over the years have perfected our orders. We won’t mention them by name, but other sandwich chains just can’t compete. Indeed, last year, Thrillist named the Pub Sub the best sandwich in the country. We agree. (And no, this story isn't sponsored by Publix.)

Pub Subs come up in conversation at least once a week in the Southern Kitchen office; most of the Southern Kitchen team is very passionate about their love of the sandwich, but we did find one team member who finds Pub Subs to be “just okay.” His opinion is an outlier (it is wrong), so we don’t take it very seriously.

Liz Schrock, Digital Marketing Analyst: “The Pub Sub isn’t a fancy sandwich. It’s an approachable and relatable sandwich. The ingredients in a Pub Sub are always fresh (@subway), the bread isn’t soggy (@subway), the chicken tenders are juicy and crunchy at the same — it’s basically sub heaven. I’m definitely living my best life when I’m at the pool with a chicken tender Pub Sub (the king of all Pub Subs, by the way) and a beer.”

My cucumber patch is prolific this year. I’m fermenting “pickles”, enjoying cucumber soup, eating cucumber sandwiches, and cucumber laden salads...

Sorry I got off on a tangent... But what I wanted to say before the Cucumber ad lib was that Publix also has a great key lime pie. and key lime pie goes well with cucumber dishes for a nice summertime meal in the heat of it all

Mayo on an Italian sub? That’s just so wrong. Why don’t you put caramel sauce and Blu cheese dressing on there while you’re at it?

If you’re in NOLA...be sure to grab a muffuletta at the Central Grocery. To die for.

Several years ago, friends showed up for my birthday in Nola. We went to LaGasse’s NOLA Restaurant (the best!), Commander’s Palace, and one day bought sandwiches at Central Market and drove out to Oak Alley and all the other plantation homes on the Mississippi Delta and picknicked. How’s that for a birthday?

Try the Peachtree, grilled Black Forest ham, brie and peach hot pepper jelly served with dill horseradish sauce on the side. Messy but delicious! Oh my! Now I am hungry for one! I always get a half with a salad. It was my special lunch treat after visits to the oncologist and remains one of my favorite sandwiches.

Subway’s cold cut combo without mayo or mustard but with Oil and Vinegar is very good....good amount of meat, cheese and lots of crunchy veggies and jalapenos if you want them...

The Pub Sub is freshly made. The ingredients are excellent. The meats are Boar’s Head. I’ll take that any day of the week

When in NYC I always go to Katz

“It’s an approachable and relatable sandwich.”

Well, la-di-da...

All seriousness aside...sandwiches of all varieties rule. And thank goodness for a WIDE variety of drive-thru sandwich-making restaurants! Ever try eating spaghetti while driving down the road?

My nearby Publix makes the worst fried chicken in the area. It is greasy & not the least bit crispy. Church’s is far better. Overall, I was not impressed with their hot foods. Publix’s prices are about 20% higher than other stores.
