Trump prepares to pitch gun proposals few really want

The [P]resident is considering tougher penalties for straw buyers, the death penalty for mass shooters and bringing more records to the background check database.

President Donald Trump is finalizing his proposals designed to curb gun violence. But it's unclear whether anyone really wants what he’ll be offering.

Most Democrats consider them too weak. Most Republicans, long resistant to triggering their base or the gun lobby, fear Trump won’t push them forcefully enough — leaving them hanging.

The two sides will begin jockeying over firearms legislation when lawmakers return to Capitol Hill next week, a fight expected to continue through the fall after a string of mass shootings this summer once again pushed the issue to the forefront in Washington.

Trump's proposals will likely include expediting the death penalty for mass shooters, releasing troubled teenagers’ previously sealed records to the background-check database after they become adults and requiring the FBI to notify local authorities when a potential buyer fails a background check, according to people familiar with the weekslong discussions.

Missing from the list — at least right now — are changes that have become a rallying cry among Democrats in Congress and on the campaign trail, such as universal background checks for gun purchases.

In the weeks since two back-to-back mass shootings in Texas and Ohio left 31 people dead, White House staffers have been talking with congressional aides of both parties as well as advocacy groups to develop a list of policies for Trump to consider. The president said this week he received 29 proposals.

What Trump is considering, I can live with.

I still wish he'd stop passing more gun control than Obama.

The article does not display cutesy bracketing like that.

Do you mean to imply that Trump is ineligible or born in Kenyanesia or something?

Curious you would mention that. :)

The author wrote 'president', which I feel is disrespectful. You should capitalize such a powerful, respected position.

So I capitalized it, and bracketed it -- as is normal literary behavior -- to demonstrate my alteration.

So, in direct contrast to your supposition, I actually was demonstrating MORE respect to President Trump... much more than the author of the article was!

I understand your reasoning, but many wouldn’t see it that way. (We used to call another president ‘resident’.)

Actually, the writer was following proper grammar, which doesn't care about feelings or respect. "President" is a proper noun and capitalized only when referring to a specific person who holds that title, i.e. "President Donald Trump" or "President Barack Obama." If used as a common noun, it is lowercased such as "The president is considering tougher penalties..."

Ok, so I am wrong per the rules of grammar, yet I still will continue to capitalize President, so long as it is President Trump.

If the office is captured by a Democrat, I shall write president

What about them brackets you tossed in there?

Were they really good or maybe were they a mistake?

We weren't really talking about capitalization so mush as brackets.

What up with them brackets?

And....

Back to the article discussion:

the death penalty for mass shooters, releasing troubled teenagers’ previously sealed records to the background-check database after they become adults and requiring the FBI to notify local authorities when a potential buyer fails a background check

Not a thing in these three items endanger gun ownership and the 2nd Amendment.

Of course, the DNCMedia will not be pleased until confiscation starts, but F them.

“Most Democrats consider them too weak. Most Republicans, long resistant to triggering their base or the gun lobby, fear Trump won’t push them forcefully enough — leaving them hanging.”

So basically, not because they are our servants - working for us and not ruling over us - but we’re pesky and unmanageable. Got it.

“prepares to”
“about to”
“considering”
“mulls”

This is not news. When it actually happens, it’s news.
