Michael Bloombergs Everytown for Gun Safety is out with a new report urging the use of red flag laws to deprive veterans of their guns in hopes of reducing suicide, but their gun control solution to a mental health problem is getting pushback from many in the military.
Weve talked extensively about the problems with flag laws here at Bearing Arms, but forget the due process concerns for a moment. Who really believes that the best way to help a suicidal veteran is to take their guns away and then leave them alone? Red flag laws are a gun control measure masquerading as a mental health proposal, which is why Everytown is pushing it so hard.
The problem of veteran suicides by firearm drew Everytowns attention because of the statistics; the Department of Veterans Affairs reported last month that firearms were used in 69% of all veteran suicides in 2017, the latest year data is available. Thats a nearly 33% increase from 2005.
Everytowns first recommendation is for more states to enact extreme risk protection orders, also known as red-flag laws, which allow police or family members to temporarily remove someones firearms if a state court agrees the person presents a danger to themselves or others. The idea is to place barriers between veterans in crisis and their firearms.

“...urging the use of red flag laws to deprive veterans of their guns....”
The real purpose of red flag laws.
The common question asked at the VA for any appointment for anything.
"Do you suffer from depression?"
"Have you ever thought of hurting yourself?"
Unless you are there for a gun shot wound, deny, deny, deny...
How long before they pull this crap on Medicare patients?
They wanna take guns from veterans?
Pretty sure I can guess why and how thats gonna turn out.
“The common question asked at the VA for any appointment for anything”
At the local VA if I press ‘1’ it skips all the recordings you have heard over and over.
It goes straight to ringing the number,
Thank God my wife & I (we’re both vets) are adequately insured. Our few trips to the local VA following retirement were not helpful.
Anyone who does go there should imagine that there is a huge sign in the waiting area, “ALL JOKES WILL BE TAKEN SERIOUSLY!”
Wasn’t asked about guns but I know they regard Vietnam vets as hair trigger crazy like the 1970’s stereotype villains on Mannix & SWAT.
Clearly, in communist minds, these are probably the first Americans who will finally say "Enough is enough!" and begin eliminating the growing communist tyranny once and for all...
My routine answer is “I know you have to ask but I don’t have to answer”.
Makes me wonder if the precursor for this was OVER diagnosing Veterans with PTS”D”
Just a hunch
Ready-Aim-Vote (triggering the anti-American idiots)
It would be interesting to know the stats on suicides before & after Prozac (& like ‘boys’ drugs), before and after ‘its etc were allowed to openly serve or serve openly’, before and after females in COMBAT (basically resulting in the lowering of standards for ALL).
Then take the suicides ‘after’ the above and see what percentage fall into those categories.
This f’n government can waste billions ‘chasing rainbows’ yet don’t have enough time or money to care for those that NEED it and are suffering at the behest of the Government.

Am sure it was in someones mind.
I have been ‘warning’ vets about letting them get you in that status as it is a perfect crutch for them (govt) to act against those supposedly afflicted.
I had attended a VA sponsored ‘group session for addicts’ (after I finished a state mandated ASAP program) and it seemed they were trying to push me towards PTSD....it was in 1990 and drugs and alcohol were put in the same category. Whenever they tried to get me to ‘request’ help I just told them I just liked to drink, it WASN’T because of my Mother, Father, Boss, Job, Navy etc I LIKED TO DRINK.
They don’t buy that answer and I got accused of having an attitude. (they were correct, I had an ATTITUDE and finally had to ‘beg’ them to release me from the program and give help to someone who needed it).
I had been a functioning ‘drunk’ for 20+ years and just put it down - and smoking at the same time.
The ONLY encouragemnt I got ‘officially’ was ...YOU or NO ONE can do that....
well, I am pushing 30 years of NOT doing either (NEVER did drugs (as WE know it)).
I attribute my ‘success’ to telling EVERYONE what I was doing then putting my hardheadedness to good use and vowing I would NEVER give anyone the chance(or satisfaction) to say I was wrong regarding this subject.....
The real purpose of red flag laws is to deprive EVERY American gun owner of his/her Second Amendment Right to keep and bear arms!
Red flag laws are just the start of the process!
The real purpose is to take guns away from everyone, one at a time.

I see that our resident Nazis are writing another comicbook scenario. Good for them.
Here’s the comicbook answer from veterans:
We stacked the bodies of gun-grabbers like cordwood from coast to coast. The few that survived were happy to board freighters sailing one-way to North Korea. We weren’t sure that Capt. Bloomberg could sail a straight line from San Francisco to Asia, but we told him to give it a try. Each passenger was given a lunch bag of a bologna sandwich, chips and a hand grenade.
