I dont watch much hockey, but the Stanley Cup semis and finals are must watch TV. I can’t name more than five players, but the action is great.

Soccer at the very highest levels is also great.

It’s popular, but it is one of those sports that is more exciting to experience in person. TV just doesn’t do it justice. So it gives the appearance of being less popular. 8>)

My kid has played hockey since he was six. He’s 18 now and was captain of his U18 club hockey team. And will now play for his college club hockey team.

It’s really a growing sport among younger guys. Like youth soccer was 20 years ago. Or like lacrosse was 10 years ago.

He likes to play Hockey almost as much as he does football but he isn’t big enough to play D1 football in college.

For him, it is the strategy and fitness that keeps him playing.

Fun to play.

I always thought watching hockey was better in person than on television.

Answer:

Steph Curry (and many others) plus games that aren’t decided by scores like 2-1 or 3-2. I like 103-95 a lot better.

I think Hockey has gained in popularity tremendously. I live in Texas and my son plays hockey. There are hockey rinks everywhere down here.

For those that have never been to a hockey game, if you have a chance go to an NHL minor league game. Tickets are pretty cheap and the level of play is awesome. Minor league games are very easy to get great seats so you get the full effect of the game. It's incredibly exciting and so much fun.

We loved hockey back in the Red Wings heyday, went to event to watch on big screen and all. We lost interest after the accident and our favorites were traded

We no longer have TV, so that may be another reason.

Hard to see for me. The puck is small and it moves at incredible speed.

Sometimes the red light comes on and the crowd goes wild. That's how I know somebody scored, because I never saw it.

And the rules, which I never entirely understood...

It was huge in Buffalo when the Sabres were competitive. Gilbert Perreault, Marin, Robert, Domenik Haschek, Roger Crozier, Punch Imlach.

Obvious reason is you can’t play it in the back yard.

Sure you can if you are far enough north. My wife is Canadian, and she had me put in a homemade rink (boards and tarps) in Ogle County, Illinois. Main problem was getting it level.

Hockey is in fact plenty popular in cities like Boston, NY, Philly, Detroit, Chicago. Practicing outside of winter will cost you though, but that's true even in Vancouver and Toronto.

A bunch of guys sliding at top speed all over in a willy-nilly manner hoping to get a chance to hit a puck with a stick might not be as interesting to watch as some folks think it is.

“fans are only there for the fights.”

Was at a boxing match and a hockey game broke out.

The only hockey players most Americans can name from the top of their heads are Gretzky, Howe, Messier, and Lemieux.

Plenty can also name Bobby Hull and Bobby Orr.

I’m surprised they don’t employ CGI to somehow highlight the puck ...”

They did, I think way back in the 80s. I’m guessing it didn’t work all that well...

They tech used to show yards to gain etc in Football were created to follow the puck on the ice. The problem is the puck moves to fast for the tech to work. They realized that it would work well for Football. Thus millions who would be clueless as to the line to gain can now understand football better.

The NHL has the most exciting and intense postseason of any of the major sports.

Playoff hockey is the only hockey I follow. The teams have a lot at stake and are ramped up ... they give it 100% for three periods.
A lot of mid-season games, it's a long regular season with 80 plus games, are slow paced and boring to watch.
