Why do you think hockey is not popular in the United States?

Too many other sports, better sports.

American-made and perfected. Baseball, Football, Basketball.

Nothing else is even close

A goal in hockey is like Bigfoot. People claim to have seen one but there's never been any actual evidence of one.

Two of my boys were varsity HS defensemen. They couldn't stand soccer, which I think is a little like ground-hockey without the equipment.

One said, "Dad, do you know why there are these deadly soccer-stadium riots?" "The fans riot out of sheer boredom."

I live in Texas. The only TV sports that I watch are Big 12 Football and the Dallas Stars.

Cons:

Because the sun sets early in the winter

It’s played in a cold arena behind glass on a little rink

Low scoring

Pros:

Zamboni

Zamboni driver

For me, it is because I cannot see and follow the puck because it is so small and moves so fast.

I'm surprised they don't employ CGI to somehow highlight the puck so that it's always obvious where it is. I'd like it better.

It’s like soccer. Low scoring. Continuous broken record.

Pro Basketball is number four because of the players’ culture. Pro football is quickly lowering it’s ranked due to the culture of its players. You can’t watch baseball any longer unless you speak Spanish. I’ll choose hockey any day and deal with the little French involved. (All written semi-tongue in cheek).

The NHL has the most exciting and intense postseason of any of the major sports.

Hockey in person: the game is interrupted for 1-2 times during each period for ice restoration. Loud music and annoying commercials while it’s done by pretty ladies scraping the ice and Zamboni machine restoring the surface. There is no flow to the game, the game itself seems to be less important than above activities.
The game mostly consists of “dumping” the puck into opponents’ zone and attempts to recover it by pure physical pressure. Teams/players/playing styles are indistinguishable from each other. Can’t imagine paying around $100 to watch this; made this mistake twice - the first time being my last one.

Maybe some think of hockey as a Canadian sport. But the vast majority of NHL teams are in the US.

Does hockey have loyal fans but a small number of fans, compared to other sports? I wonder how all these US based teams have survived all these years, if they didn’t have enough of a fan base.

Ok, you asked. This is just my opinion. When a goal is made, it seems accidental.

I kinda disagree. The only real ‘sports’ are mountain climbing, gymnastics, shooting sports, and auto racing (specifically Formula 1). The rest are just games

There's an average of 6 goals per NHL game, which is higher than the number of TDs in a NFL game (about 4.5).

They did, I think way back in the 80s. I’m guessing it didn’t work all that well...

One word: It’s dull.

Okay, that’s two words. Nevertheless, hockey is dull. Dull, dull, dull. Two teams skate back and forth for what seems like forever. And then the final score is something like 2-1.

Now, if they would triple the size of the scoring area, that would help. More scoring = more excitement.

Have the goalies ALWAYS worn those oversized leg pads? Take them off. More goals means more fun games to watch.

Sometimes it is. That plus a hot goaltender make predicting hockey outcomes more difficult than other sports. I like knowing that you can never be sure what will happen.

My guess is it’s not a sport that kids can readily play...Every did can play baseball, basketball and football...
