Syracuse University quarantine: 23 hours in a dorm with no AC, card games with your ‘family unit’

Juan Rivera and Payton Dunn have begun their college careers at Syracuse University by spending their first two weeks in quarantine.

They spend 23 hours a day inside. There is no air conditioning. They are allowed to interact with a group of only 15 to 20 people. With their one hour of time outdoors, they are checked in and out of the dorm and given strict instructions on the path they’re allowed to walk. Food is delivered to a common room each day in brown paper bags and delivery options are forbidden.

About 3,000 Syracuse students from 34 different states are subject to Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s quarantine orders. Those orders require individuals coming to New York to live apart from other people for 14 days to avoid any chance they pass on the virus.

Most Syracuse students are doing their quarantine off campus but about 420 are doing it in dorm rooms, an experience that is costing some SU freshmen $1,000....

What's going on at the colleges in your area?

It is my fantasy that in a 3-4 years recruiters will only recruit those students who started out at a community college this year on the theory that any freshman who went away to college in 2020 and put up with this sort of crap is too stupid to take a chance on hiring.

Shouldn’t they be let out on the street because of the Chinese Virus threat?

Prisoners are.

They’ll be let out if they say they’re going downtown to riot and loot.

Have a grandson under a more strict quarantine in an upstate NY university. He doesn’t get the hour off or the 15-20. Get’s to go to the lounge to pick up his two meals or morning snack. Nine days in.

Well, you know, they could play a game in which they wear masks over their entire face, have sex, and then have to guess who they had sex with.

Wrong. TUITION is 54k a year. When I graduated from HS, Syracuse had one of the highest tuitions in the country. It’s private, not part of SUNY. Only one person from my graduating class attended. Their father was a Dr.

Congratulations on getting a child into a service academy.

I put service academies in a different category.

It’s worth the hassle of a quarantine going there.

There are probably a few other instances in which this Syracuse-type quarantine is worth it, such as for a student who gets a huge scholarship to a good school with a top program in some obscure, but lucrative, major and who is absolutely committed to that major.
