Leftist students at Syracuse University recently voiced opposition to an event featuring Yeonmi Park, a North Korean defector. Ahead of the event hosted by the Syracuse College Republicans in partnership with Young America’s Foundation, students destroyed fliers and posted messages critical of Park and the College Republicans in an online forum. Park, who delivered her speech on Apr. 5, “has criticized concepts like political correctness, trigger warnings and ‘woke culture’ in her career,” according to the student newspaper, The Daily Orange.

The Syracuse University Board of Trustees is considering revoking the honorary degree given to Rudy Giuliani, the Daily Orange reported Tuesday. SU Chancellor Kent Syverud told the Syracuse University Student Association on Monday that he brought the topic up with the school’s board of trustees, according to the report. In April, the University Senate passed a resolution, introduced by the Student Association, urging the revocation of Giuliani’s honorary degree. Syverud said the board debated the issue and asked him to research how peer institutions revoke honorary degrees, according to the Daily Orange. Syverud said he hoped the full board would...

Students at Syracuse University who see or hear those situations from which arise claims of "bias-motivated" speech, or worse, are being told they could be punished if they don't get involved. The situation was profiled by Jonathan Turley, the famed Georgetown University law professor whose positions often align with progressive interests. He noted that students were told recently that, "The Cody of Student conduct has been revised, based on your input, to state that violations of the code that are bias-motivated – including conduct motivated by racism – will be punished more severely. The university also revised the code to...

Juan Rivera and Payton Dunn have begun their college careers at Syracuse University by spending their first two weeks in quarantine. They spend 23 hours a day inside. There is no air conditioning. They are allowed to interact with a group of only 15 to 20 people. With their one hour of time outdoors, they are checked in and out of the dorm and given strict instructions on the path they’re allowed to walk. Food is delivered to a common room each day in brown paper bags and delivery options are forbidden. About 3,000 Syracuse students from 34 different states...

“I like you. You and me, we’re going to be best friends.” It is early January, and Eric Schneiderman is sitting in his 25th-floor office above Lower Manhattan, doing his best Donald Trump impression, puckering his lips into a duck face, scrunching up his nose and lowering his voice into something that resembles the president’s outer-borough growl. Schneiderman is recalling his meeting with Trump in 2010. Back then, Schneiderman was running for attorney general of New York, and Trump was still in his pre-birther, reality TV host phase. Trump had donated money to one of Schneiderman’s opponents in the Democratic...

Syracuse University has suspended a campus fraternity after a video surfaced of members using racist, anti-Semitic, homophobic and ableist slurs. In the video, discovered by the Daily Orange, Syracuse’s student newspaper, a member of Theta Tau gets on his knees and repeats an oath with slurs against blacks, Hispanics and Jews, among others. The school’s administration suspended the fraternity, whose members attend the engineering school, after confirming the video’s authenticity on Wednesday. …

The young woman shown spewing hateful remarks in the video shared to Instagram has been identified as Hanna Strong, a midfield player on the women’s soccer team. Coach Phil Wheddon has suspended the Monson, Mass., native from the team in light of the allegations. The undated video shows Strong shouting at a black male student who is walking away from their confrontation with his hands up.
  • My Train Wreck Conversion (Lesbian turns away, chooses Christianity)

As a leftist lesbian professor, I despised Christians. Then I somehow became one. The word Jesus stuck in my throat like an elephant tusk; no matter how hard I choked, I couldn't hack it out. Those who professed the name commanded my pity and wrath. As a university professor, I tired of students who seemed to believe that "knowing Jesus" meant knowing little else. Christians in particular were bad readers, always seizing opportunities to insert a Bible verse into a conversation with the same point as a punctuation mark: to end it rather than deepen it.

Syracuse police say they are investigating an allegation that Syracuse University assistant basketball coach Bernie Fine molested a team ball boy for more than a dozen years beginning in the mid-1980s. Police stressed to Outside The Lines they are in the early stages of the investigation. The alleged victim, Bobby Davis, now 39, told Outside the Lines that Fine molested him beginning in 1983 shortly before Davis entered the seventh grade. Davis, the team's ball boy for six years beginning in 1984, said the abuse occurred at Fine's home, at the Syracuse basketball facilities, and on road trips, including the...

He may be a hero on Wall Street but the JP Morgan boss Jamie Dimon is seriously uncool in the eyes of students. There's revolt in the air at Syracuse University in upstate New York where Dimon is due to give a graduation address next month. Disgruntled students complain that the university's invitation to Dimon amounts to an attempt to use their commencement ceremony (graduation to us Brits) as a tool to rebuild the public image of the disgraced banking industry. And they point out that while JP Morgan coins in record profits, the credit crunch has left many students...

Syracuse, N.Y. -- Former Gov. Eliot Spitzer will speak at Syracuse University next week on the financial crisis. Spitzer's talk, "From Libertarianism to Angry Populism: Have We Learned Anything From the Crisis of the Past Two Years?" will begin at 5 p.m. Thursday in the Maxwell School auditorium. Spitzer resigned in March 2008, after barely more than a year in office, amid accusations he patronized a prostitute. The talk is free and open to the public.

Even as war rages in Iraq, federal agents have begun to unlock the secrets of an unlicensed, unregistered Islamic charity in upstate New York that allegedly pumped millions of dollars into Baghdad. Flouting U.S. economic sanctions, the group shipped cash out of Syracuse, laundered it in banks in Jordan and then illegally funneled it into Iraq, according to an unsealed federal indictment. Operating under the name Help the Needy, the organization described itself as a tax-exempt nonprofit that provided food and humanitarian assistance to the "starving children and suffering Muslims of Iraq." But it lacked charitable status, misrepresented itself in...
  • Students Oppose Giuliani As Speaker

Filed at 3:17 p.m. ET SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) -- Former New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani's treatment of minorities and homeless people led some Syracuse University students to oppose him as commencement speaker, but the school refused to rescind the invitation. Chancellor Kenneth Shaw met Tuesday night with about 40 students upset over Giuliani's record as mayor. Giuliani, who gained widespread attention for his resolve following the Sept. 11 attacks, was the top choice of student body representatives on a selection panel that helped choose a speaker for the May 12 commencement, school spokesman Kevin Morrow said. Student Association President...
