Fellows of that generation and those who’ve seen combat saw things probably best not seen. I can’t imagine seeing your buddies getting killed.

One of my great uncles came back from the Battle of the Bulge no longer eating pork. 3rd-hand story was that the pigs running in the forests there in Europe were eating the dead, and he saw it.

I used to do aircraft accident and autopsy photos for the USAF after the the Vietnam war, and can confirm that burnt human bodies smell much like pork cooking. He was a tanker, and was himself badly burned, so it may have been that, instead or as well.
