Minnesota's attorney general said there was no evidence to charge Derek Chauvin with a hate crime in the murder of George Floyd

Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison told CBS's "60 Minutes" in an interview aired Sunday that there was no evidence that Derek Chauvin's murder of George Floyd last May was a hate crime.

Chauvin was convicted of murder and manslaughter charges on Tuesday for Floyd's death, during which the former police officer kneeled on Floyd's neck for more than nine minutes. Chauvin faces up to 40 years in prison and is currently being held in solitary confinement.

When interviewer Scott Pelley asked Ellison whether the murder was a hate crime, the prosecutor replied: "I wouldn't call it that because hate crimes are crimes where there's an explicit motive and of bias. We don't have any evidence that Derek Chauvin factored in George Floyd's race as he did what he did."

When Pelley pointed out prosecutors could have charged Chauvin with a hate crime under state law, Ellison said they only charge crimes for which they have "evidence that we could put in front of a jury to prove."...

Wait. So why did Chauvin do it? I thought...

Never mind.

He’ll be clarifying his comments after a brief and violent twitter storm.

I still don’t understand how he is convicted 3 times for 1 death. I think the jury should have to pick and choose one charge in a case like this.

As if the mob cares about facts or observations. They want blood and revenge. And the DemonRATs invented and encouraged it. Chauvin has the misfortune to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. The Pols are perfectly willing to sacrifice him and anyone else they need to achieve their totalitarian aims.

In fact, they want these injustices. They believe it will cow any others who might not bow down to them. So convicting innocent people is one of their aims.

Yes, they are that evil. They are purposefully releasing a howling mob on the country.

There should be a means by which we could kick individual cities out of the union. States such as Minnesota and Washington and even New York have many sentient, intelligent, and productive folks. We, of course, know the cities in those states - and others - which have none of the mentioned people.

As for Mexifornia, kick their fetid little Obahamoles so far away that they end up in their master country, China. Good riddance to worse than bad rubbish.

I think the jury was trying to send a message with that verdict, and I don’t think the message was that they thought Chauvin was the guiltiest person of any guilty person who ever lived.

I think they were trying to say, “We know there will be riots if he is not found guilty, so here you go: Guilty. Guilty. Guilty. Happy now?”

Isn’t murder a case where there is explicit intent to kill?

What would I have done in his position? Knowing the outcome of the trial and that hindsight is 20-20, of course I would let Mr. George go.

I know, such a viewpoint is unfair. The evidence points to overdose being the cause of death, but Chauvin’s department did not have his back. He was following established procedure.

That’s why cops are retiring in droves.

There turned out to be no evidence to charge him with anything. That’s why he had to be lynched.

But there’s a whole lot of scumbags who committed multiple hate crimes by assaulting innocent people, looting, burning down, and destroying public, and private property, in the aftermath of Floyd’s death. When will those people be held accountable for their hate crimes?

Not sure what the confusion is here. For a “hate crime” they would have had to prove that Chauvin was motivated by racism. As is, they just needed to show that he used excessive force and killed him. Why add an extra burden that you can’t prove? The concept of “hate crimes” is fundamentally ridiculous anyway.

Chauvin was subjected to double jeopardy, a violation of the 5th Amendment. A smart attorney would come at it from this angle.

Black Lives Matter’s whole reason for existing is that police do the types of things that happened to George Floyd because police hate black people.
