Massachusetts bill would force nonprofit universities to pay their 'fair share'

The Massachusetts state legislature is considering a bill that would allow local governments to "tax" nonprofit colleges and universities.

The bill, HD3207, would allow cities to force traditionally tax-exempt organizations owning at least $15 million in property to pay PILOTs — payments in lieu of taxation — "equal to 25% of the amount that would be paid if the property were not exempt from taxation."

Speaking to the Harvard Crimson in April, State Rep. Erika Uyterhoeven, the bill's sponsor and party member of the Democratic Socialists of America, said that the legislation was crafted to target universities.

“Unfortunately, Harvard has failed to pay their obligations, and this bill is attempting to address that problem,” Uyterhoeven said. “This is an attempt to say, 'Look, let's just then make it law, rather than having these agreements between municipalities and various nonprofit institutions.'”...

Most recently, University of Pennsylvania and Drexel University students and faculty marched through the streets of Philadelphia to demand that both schools offer the optional payments. The march was organized by Penn for PILOTs, Philly Democratic Socialists of America, Drexel Community for Justice, and other activist groups....

Plank #1 of the Communist Manifesto: Abolition of private property rights, and confiscatory taxation is the way to do it.

Since Harvard is opposed to your private property rights, they deserve it. Make it retroactive to the 17th Century including interest and penalty.

Tuition will just rise, this wont solve the problem. It will also price out any other universities starting up in the system.

Proof a university education does not make one logical or wise.

I think all “foundations” should pay a bit as well. If the police state is going to tax me for breathing, they should tax these ‘foundations’ and ‘endowments’ as well.

The Progressive religion of Government demands tribute/tithe/sacrifice of all. Zero consideration of whether that $ can do society better elsewhere, no credit where the entity improves the jurisdiction. Progressives cry “pay your fair share!” - dogmatic quibbling aside, from the perspective of Massachusetts does Harvard not improve Massachusetts? Congrats Harvard, y’all have taught your progeny to eat their own.

It might be fun to see the pompous Hah-vahd have to cough up some millions from their billions in endowments, but the woman pushing this is an angry alien freakshow Socialist wearing a Dutch name but appears to be “Dutch” by way of their former colonial holdings - i.e., likely Indonesian.

So now she’s here trying to take out her anger over European colonization 4 centuries ago on our country.

The American revolution in Massachusetts was over excess taxation, not in favor of punitive “pay your fair share” crap. She’s a Communist counter-revolutionary, determined to put the Feudalist system back in place.

All the state universities are non-profit. Most Christian universities are Christians in name only. Make them pay up. Every POS idea in the last 60 years has come from the Humanities Departments of “higher education”.

$15 million in property to pay PILOTs — payments in lieu of taxation — "equal to 25% of the amount that would be paid if the property were not exempt from taxation."

What this ignores is that the students attending those schools are not occupying space in publicly-funded schools, so they are saving taxpayer money just by their presence in the private schools.

"All the state universities are non-profit."

Which is absolutely meaningless considering their bloated budgets and high salaries.

Yes,
Harvard has humongous endowment and it is building it all the time. Then they charge sky high tuition.
They all want to rise taxes on others “just few cents more” will solve all the world problems.
Let then also contribute their “few cents”.

Yes, taxation is bad, but even worse is uneven taxation. If there is taxation, ALL should pay!
