JFK and PT109 are not the best example. Remember, he got run over by a Japanese destroyer. Celebrate instead the defenders of Wake Island who held the Japanese at bay and delayed their progress.
Yes, quite true. I agree. But the title of the article is:

He is certainly entitled to post an article on that subject (and would hopefully detail JFK's incompetence, etc.). I just don't understand why there is absolutely no mention in the first five paragraphs.

While I was wandering around in my uniform (I was a Marine Major back then), I was accosted by a young woman from an antiwar group who seized on me and loud and annoying and soon we had a crowd around us as she accused the United States of "committing wars all over the world and that Reagan was a madman with his finger on the nuclear trigger and to Australians, the Yanks aren't any better than the bloody Russians!".
At that point, I had had enough and despite the large crowd now packed around us, I said loudly "stop! - while your young men were protecting Britain around Tobruk, our young men were fighting to defend Australia from the Japanese. I just came from Darwin where I saw the wreckage of a US P-40 where a young American man gave his life for Australia - when was the last time a Russian gave his life for Australia?"
I braced myself for the inevitable backlash from the crowd, but it turned out that the majority were American tourists and I got applause instead of jeers - and that young women slunk off.

In a forum some years back, an Australian woman went off on me about the US US military.
I replied “If it wasn’t for the US in WW2, your childhood would have been spent growing up in a Japanese brothel. You’re welcome.”
Last year I read a novel called “The Hooligans” by retired US Navy Captain PT Dueterman.
It was a piece of fiction but included a great deal of history of the Hooligan Navy who operated the PT Boats.
It seems these guys were the motorcycle gang of the navy. Strictly following the rules wasn’t their thing but they were rather effective at their craft.
In other words, McHale’s Navy was somewhat a documentary.
For some reason I always admired the PT boats. When I was in college, I was on a summer mission project with Campus Crusade for Christ in Wildwood, NJ. We also had summer jobs. Mine was working on the crew of a tour boat. The owner had a WWII mine sweeper tied to the dock. It was a project boat he never worked on. The sweeper was essentially a PT boat with a different purpose. It was an amazing looking craft.
Another tour boat was an actual repurposed PT boat. The owners late father owned it at one time.
He got some of his crew killed by not getting out of the way of a slower Japanese ship.
And don’t forget why he was there in the first place - they had to get him away from his Nazi spy lover.

Spot on. Kennedy, like Jimmy Stewart begged and pleaded to come on active duty and serve our Country during World War II. Stewart flew combat missions as a B-24 pilot stationed with the 8th in England. JFK displayed his leadership and devotion in saving the lives of all but two of his crew.
Unlike the scum we have elected President since then, JFK is one of the best...along with Truman, Reagan and Trump.

My dad was in the Pacific. Didn’t see combat, but was part of the occupation force in Japan after the war.
One of my uncles was wounded at Guadalcanal, saw a lot of his buddies die. He recovered and was sent to Bougainville. Came home, raised a family and had a successful business, as did my Dad as well. Uncle Mike lived to be 101. They were both Army.
They were truly the Greatest Generation.

There was a story that he was going to be courtmartialed over that. His father turned it around and got him a medal. No doubt JFK loved his country but his fat youngest brother had no business running in ‘80. Growing up just what was ever expected of him?
