The Greatness and Genius of America

“I sought for the greatness and genius of America in her commodious harbors and her ample rivers-- and it was not there... in her fertile fields and boundless forests-- and it was not there... in her rich mines and her vast world commerce-- and it was not there... in her democratic Congress and matchless Constitution-- and it was not there. Not until I went into the churches of America and heard her pulpits flame with righteousness did I understand the secret of her genius and power. America is great because she is good, and if America ever ceases to be good, America will cease to be great.” (Around 1840 by Alexis de Tocqueville, author of Democracy in America, a book which was assigned to the entire Republican freshman class of the 104th congress.)

"Government was not to be run by whatever the majority wanted but instead by principle, specifically the principles of the Bible. Our U.S. Constitution was founded on Biblical principles and it was the intention of the authors for this to be a Christian nation. The Constitution had 55 people work upon it, of which 52 were evangelical Christians." M.E. Bradford, A Worthy Company: Brief Lives of the Framers of the United States Constitution (Marlborough, N.H.: Plymouth Rock Foundation, 1982), p. 4-5.

Two college professors, Donald Lutz and Charles Hyneman, researched the source of ideas of our Founding Fathers based upon extant writings. They reviewed an estimated 15,000 items with explicit political content printed between 1760 and 1805 and from these items they identified 3,154 references to other sources. The source they most often quoted was the Bible, accounting for 34% of all citations. Sixty percent of all quotes came from men who used the Bible to form their conclusions. That means that 94% of all quotes by the founding fathers were based on the Bible. The founding fathers took ideas from the Bible and incorporated them into our government.

This is why Biblical morality was taught in public schools until the early 1960's. Government officials were required to declare their belief in God even to be allowed to hold a public office until a case in the U.S. Supreme Court called Torcaso v. Watkins (Oct. 1960). God was seen as the author of natural law and morality. If one did not believe in God one could not operate from a proper moral base. And by not having a foundation from which to work, one would destroy the community.

America's Christian faith is a) what made us great and b) why God through Christ blessed us more than any other people in history.

This observation has been observed by others, for example: Ambassador to U.N, Charles Malik (circa 1970s): “The good in the United States would never have come into being without the blessing and the power of Jesus Christ….I know how embarrassing this matter is to politicians, bureaucrats, businessmen and cynics: but whatever these honored men think, the irrefutable truth is that the soul of America is at its best and highest, Christian.”

In the 60s, our Christianity started being displaced by an ancient philosophy, humanism. If any of you are interested in that self-destructive ideology and its effect upon civilization, I recommend Francis Schaeffer's "How Should We Then Live." Dr. Schaeffer leans heavily upon humanism's effect upon the evolution of art, but is an outstanding work.

Humanism displaces Christianity. Humanism makes each man his own god. Do any of you remember the 60s? That became our anthem. Remember the song, "It's your thing. Do what you want to do." That's humanism. And it fails every time. And it's failed us.

During France’s Reign of Terror, France was declared to be a nation of atheists by the National Assembly. They outlawed religion and the Bible and declared their gods to be liberty and reason. Chaos ensued. One million Frenchmen were ultimately murdered and destruction was inevitable. Robespierre then proclaimed in the Convention that belief in the existence of God was necessary to the principles of virtue and morality on which the Republic was founded. And on the 7th of May, the national representatives voted by acclamation that “the French people acknowledged the existence of the Supreme Being and the immortality of the soul.

The French represent an historical example that man following his own moral compass doesn't work. Man needs Christian absolutes to survive.

We had our run and now it appears to be over. Barring some intervention by God, if you know your Bible history, it appears that Western Civilization (which, ostensibly, began on a Christian foundation) is falling to the exact same ethnicity of people that God used to punish, first, the Northern Kingdom of Israel and, second, the Southern Kingdom of Judah, viz. the descendants of Ishmael.

Dan 4:17: the most High ruleth in the kingdom of men, and giveth it to whomsoever he will, and setteth up over it the basest of men.
