It’s Throwback Thursday! And Christmas is right around the corner!
If we weren’t packing up for our trip to the mountain bunker for the winter I’d be making a batch of throwback Christmas cookies today.
With a recipe from my throwback Christmas cookie recipe book
With my old throwback cookie press.
I’d probably not be using my old throwback spices, as we all now that they should be discarded after 6 months. Nobody told our Moms that; back before the great disposable society those rusty little suckers would be tucked away in a corner of the cupboard for decades on end. In fact, but for the decorations, these could have been my Mom’s:
Well anyway, no baking for me today. I have to finish packing, cleaning and fretting about what I’ve forgotten to pack/clean. So I’m out of here. But don’t let that stop you. Christmas cookies make everything better.
*sigh* I wish I had time to make a batch of the very slow Springerles that Raj’s father used to love.

Don’t listen to Big Spice industry!
They are just trying to pump revenue.
It’s tied to CHY-na.
Belt and Road initiative...infrastructure...build back better.
Yes, I cleaned out my spice cabinet and had a container of Hershey’s cocoa with a 2011 expiration date. I have been using it just fine........ never looked at the date. lol
All that stuff could have come out of my mom’s kitchen.
We have a modern version of that Mirro cookie press. Naturally it’s made of plastic (but the dies are still metal) and uses batteries.
Well, it was all tongue-in-cheek.
Still, I buy little used spices in small amounts but, until they change the flavor of the dish, I continue to use them.
Now...those rusty tins?
YMMV
My mom made those shortbread cookies every year.
I have the exact same Aunt Jenny’s Cookies recipe book and the same Mirro press, still in the original box (well used though) with the wooden holder for the dies. It was my Mom’s and bring back a ton of memories.
Do you happen to have a good pfefferneuse recipe?
There’s the problem - buying used spices!
I use spices til they’re gone; often takes decades. Nobody ever complains about my cooking. Chef Ramsey would chew me up and spit me out.
Just like Lay’s potato chips:

Mincemeat cookies are a family tradition. Yum!
I’m still making the old family anise Christmas cookie recipe.
Some of the ingredients are hard to find, but it’s well worth looking for them.
My grandfather used to make a killer applesauce cake for Christmas. Killer, because it was soaked in rum, then aged for six weeks in a warm spot.
I was not allowed to eat the rum-soaked cake while GrandPa was still alive, being 80 years younger than Himself, even though after six weeks all the alcohol was long gone.
They get thrown at me, I eat 'em!!!
