A large study confirms one in five Americans believes violence motivated by political reasons is—at least sometimes—justified. Nearly half expect a civil war, and many say they would trade democracy for a strong leader, a preprint posted today on medRxiv found.
“This is not a study that’s meant to shock,” says Rachel Kleinfeld, a political violence expert at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace who was not involved in the research. “But it should be shocking.”
(snip)
He and his colleagues surveyed more than 8600 adults in English and Spanish about their views on democracy in the United States, racial attitudes in U.S. society, and their own attitudes toward political violence. The respondents were part of the Ipsos KnowledgePanel—an online research panel that has been used widely, including by Wintemute for research on violence and firearm ownership. The team then applied statistical methods to extrapolate the survey results to the entire country.
“The fact that basically half the country is expecting a civil war is just chilling,” Wintemute says. And many expect to take part. If found in a situation where they think violence is justified to advance an important political objective, about one in five respondents thinks they will likely be armed with a gun. About 7% of participants—which would correspond to about 18 million U.S. adults—said they would be willing to kill a person in such a situation.

Like several other posters have said "I've made my peace."
...and it will be over by Christmas.
“I half-jokingly tell my wife that the US will be toast by Christmas..“
Right. Only half joking. Same here. I don’t recall when I first started thinking it but 1995 was when I said out loud to others “This country is headed for civil war”. This was based upon an assessment of the implacable evil left and their contempt for law. Things proceed and grow slowly until they bloom suddenly. I can’t fathom how November won’t explode. Trump won 2 years ago and his side is going to tower over the left at the polls in 4 months. The left cannot lose. That is their mindset…they CANNOT lose.
...so the Republicans pick up 100 seats in November...the dems (especially Pelosi) won’t be able to handle that, so they’ll goad Putin/China into a nuclear war. End of America.
“many say they would trade democracy for a strong leader”
Hitler was a strong leader.
George Washington was a strong leader
Are you saying strong leaders are not good?
The Communist are not trying to take over the USA, they are attempting to destroy the USA and make slaves of the entire world.
And Nazi’s are deriving this crap.
We destroyed the Fascist B tards once before and saved Europe twice.
The USA is all that is standing in the way of the Totalitarians ruling the world.
Keep your powder dry and smell for the smoke.
From the article:
“surveyed more than 8600 adults in English and Spanish”
That is what is called a clue.
Bump
Agree. Irish Troubles, probably a little more intense just due to our population size, evolved weapons and tactics and long list of other factors that drive us to this point. Could last many years and ultimately causes a great resettlement of people (already happening) to locales that better represent their politics.
But as liberals and other leeches move to Red areas, the violence spreads to Conservative communities as well.
Note that Deep State will create terroristic acts and blame it on “White Supremacists”, “Christians”, “Conservatives”.
See the history of terrorism here.
“Are you saying strong leaders are not good?”
OBVIOUSLY, some are and some aren’t. Sheesh.
That assumes they have a democracy to begin with.
If the current regime is already authoritarian it makes the argument meaningless.
I don’t think my book overlaps. I cover more of the political background of the various Prog movements. And more on the financial/inflationary aspects. I have other prepper books that are more towards the practical.
Thx. Will add to the stack.
“I don’t see any other way the two sides are ever going to come to agreement on anything. Lord knows I hope I’m wrong but I just don’t see any other way.”
I’m sad to say I agree, close to half the population on each side believes things that directly contradict each other.
I’m hopeful that right will prevail, and America will come out of all this stronger and more free than ever! That said, I’ve always been an optimist...
The prudent thing to do is stock up on necessities like guns, ammo, and food!
“They seem very disappointed that their propaganda hasn’t convinced everyone to submit to Fascist rule meekly.”
One problem with the whole thing is they pigeon-hole patriots as “right-wingers”.
The fact is that there is no effective difference between fascism and communism. They are both authoritarian systems that enslave their subjects. The only difference is how the unholy fusion between the government and industry is accomplished!
We need a new term for that general type of government, “authoritarians” is too long! I kind of like “commufascists”, any other suggestions?
I suppose something like Your Betters, Your Owners, Your Masters, Your Controllers, or something simpler...Control Freaks.
