Scrap Metal Price Down 47% since April
Scrapyard ^ | 7/25/22 | Rebelbase

No Link.

Back in April a 1,000 pound load of metal at the scrap yard paid 8.5 cents per pound which was $85 for the half ton load I took there.

Today I had a dump load with some metal and decided to stop by the scrap yard and get $8 or $9 instead of just dumping it. It was right at 100 lbs. and payed out $4.50.

That is 47% less than what it was a little over 3 months ago.

Is that big a price drop normal in the scrap market; maybe it is a seasonal thing? Or a sign of Brandon's declining economy?

How much would they pay for a ton of old used solar panels?

The last time I dumped iron/steel, I recall getting 3 cents per. That was a long time ago.

I’ve heard that the price of lumber, which was recently sky-high, has also fallen considerably.

Got a different rate for aluminum, and also used a different scrapper.

I cannot answer your price drop question; but I question:
You transported half a ton (!!!) of Scrap Metal.

You must have your own moving equipment, right?
That must include some kind of scale to weigh it all.
Are there still many Blast Furnaces around?

Cars went from $155/ton to $110/ton recently here. Cars have been low for a few years now.

Had a couple of junk S10s sitting here that I recently took in. I saw guys with a pickup load of tin which is probably what you’re referring to when you say metal. I hope they lived really close by, otherwise they spent the scrap money in fuel. Maybe they were just cleaning up their yard/garage etc.

I won’t take in tin by itself but I’ll add it to a vehicle if I have one to scrap. 50 mile round trip to the scrap yard.

half ton could have been a bunch of 100lb items.

You drive your truck on the scale at the scrap yard. They record the weight. You dump your scrap and get on the scale again. The difference in weights is your scrap weight that you get paid for

It was a 40 year collection of random stuff from my parents property hauled in a pickup truck. The scrap yard has scales you drive across coming and going to calculate the weight of the load.

There are different grades of steel. Structural steel like angle iron, I-beams etc is worth more than tin. Gotta be cut to fit in their 4 foot square boxes though or they’ll give you crap. Tin is any sheet metal. A vehicle with no engine/transmission will get you tin price which is less than car price. Forged steel is another one.

About the only thing paying good money right now is catalytic converters, especially GM. Clean copper too of course.

I thought scrap would go up with the supply chains screwy from lockdowns but they didn’t except for soda cans. They were 30-35 cents forever and jumped to 85 cents for a little while.

This scrap yard is only a mile out of the way from going to the dump. But I hear you on the fuel cost consideration.

At the end of Trump’s presidency I could drive 3 hours to see my kids and spend $50+ - round trip on fuel.

Did it last weekend and it cost $115.

FJB!

Copper is down 5% indicating slackening manufacturing and if manufacturing is slowing then nobody needs scrap.

Just another symptom of the Brandon economic spiral.

Projects dry up when financial incentives are gone.

Yes its a sign of slowing economy.

Even gold has declined. Down 15% in the last 3 months, from about $2000/oz to around $1700.
