Renato Mariotti is the Legal Affairs Columnist for POLITICO Magazine.

He is a former federal prosecutor and host of the “On Topic” podcast.

The search warrant executed at Donald Trump’s club in Florida Monday has triggered much speculation about what the FBI was looking for in his personal safe. One thing that should not be in doubt in any longer, however, is Attorney General Merrick Garland’s willingness to go after the former president.

The Left is going for broke. Trump tells it like it is and the Left is being hoisted by their own patard.

They’re definitely desperate.

The Stasi have no reason to play it safe.

They hold all the power.

To obtain the warrant, the DOJ had to present a detailed affidavit to a judge walking through the evidence they have that a crime was committed

There are plenty of controlled, deep-state judges who would sign any warrant put in front of them. Why does this mean anything?

Just think about how “moderate” of a Supreme Court Justice Garland would have made...

Garland does have to have a strong case to move forward against Trump. He only has to have confidence that his actions will be immune from any consequences. His job is to smear Trump, it is not about getting a conviction, or getting a criminal off the street. This is a fully political act and analysis that frames this is a legal case is meaningless.

The author supposes the DOJ is acting in good faith.

It’s clear they have fast tracked taking Trump out before the midterms.

The polls are horrible for the Ds, and they know he’s about to announce he’s running again.

My first thought was that Ceasar had crossed the Rubicon. He has lined up the Praetorian Guard in his favor.

Twenty Republican Senators voted to confirm Garland as Attorney General. They are: Senators Blunt, Burr, Capito, Cassidy, Collins, Cornyn, Ernst, Graham, Grassley, Inhofe, Johnson, Lankford, McConnell, Moran, Murkowski, Portman, Romney, Rounds, Thune, and Tillis — all joined Democrats to approve Garland’s nomination.

The gutless Republicans would never take action against him, or any other criminal Democrat Federally appointed or elected.

“To obtain the warrant, the DOJ had to present a detailed affidavit to a judge...”

Should read “To obtain the warrant, the DOJ should have had to present a detailed affidavit to a judge...”

Otherwise, the presumption is that the judge is impartial and complying with the law. There’s no basis for that presumption here. Quite the contrary.
