More Space Travel Problems for ETs: g-forces
PatriotandLiberty ^ | 2023 | Jonathan Sarfati

the term “g-force” is misleading, because it refers to acceleration due to gravity. Under Newton’s Second Law, F = ma, or force = mass × acceleration. It is used because the weight force is proportional to mass, while acceleration is inversely proportional, so the acceleration of all objects due to gravity is equal. This explains Galileo’s apocryphal experiment of dropping a heavy ball and a light ball from the Leaning Tower of Pisa, and finding that they hit the ground at the same time (except for air resistance).

At the earth’s surface, the acceleration due to gravity is 9.80665 m/s², or 1 g, which will be rounded to 10 m/s² for the “back of the envelope” calculations in this article. Now “acceleration” means change in velocity, which means any change in speed or direction. At 1g, the speed changes by 10 m/s (22 mph) each second, hence 10 m/second-squared.

High g-forces are a big problem for astronauts, fighter pilots and racing drivers. How damaging they are depends on duration and direction.

They have inertial dampers.

This is why we would have seen robot drones long before alien life
And why all military aircraft will soon be exclusively drones as well.

They have inertial dampers.

And you know this to be true because….?

We don’t understand what Gravity really is, so we cannot make assumptions that interstellar space travelers will have to deal with acceleration-induced gravity issues.

For all we know there may be a way to create a “gravity shield” that blocks gravity from the inside of a ship, or creates an artificial gravity field that counteracts acceleration-induced gravity.

That's why you have to travel without moving.

They have inertial dampers.

I get up at 3AM on my last day off of work, sit on the toilet, and see this headline on my phone thinking of the replies I'd have to this article...

Then, I get out to my desk and fire up my PC to see that you guys already posted my replies for me. I can just sit and enjoy my coffee.

FR is SO filled with nerds.
I love it.

“They have inertial dampers.”

Their craft propulsion cancels out gravity. So this makes gravity an influence that is no longer an issue.

Alien ships remains stationary, folding space itself rather than moving at a fast speed.

I think that's how the Navigator's Guild does it. Plus, the spice helps with any physical stress.

The biggest problem for astronauts is the lack of gravity, not the excess of it. Lack of it creates problems for bone structure, muscle growth, and blood flow.

The author is distinctly not talking about Newtonian gravity, and he states that early on. He is using the term “g” to compare inertia to gravity. In general relativity the perceived forces of gravity and inertial are equivalent.

Ersnt Mach (yes, that Mach) said that when the street car lurches, it is the stars, not street car that makes you fall. Or as John Wheeler said, “Spacetime tells matter how to move; matter tells spacetime how to curve.” Inertial effects are result of mass. If there were mass that would be no space, so it is meaningless to speak inertia in an empty universe, as there is no such thing.

The author is merely addressing the logical consequences of inertial effects on space travel. No one will ever travel to Alpha Centuri in four years. Even the fastest probe ever created will probably take centuries to get there, but may send back photographs that arrive in four, if there is anyone around who remembers to look for them.

Maybe UFO/UAP travelers figured that out. If they’ve figured out how to get here, that may have been a minor issue.

This is reminiscent of how some scientifically-minded critics of early steam-locomotives believed that the human body could not withstand speeds above 50 mph. Some believe that women's uteruses would fly out of their bodies and others thought the human body might melt at higher speeds.

As an aside, we have all witnessed Freepers right here at good old FR say that physics is settled science...so it doesn't look like we're much different than those "scientifically-minded" critics of yesteryear.;-)

Yes that’s true enough. But even at 1g acceleration and deceleration the whole way, it would take about 6 years. But that would require insane amounts of energy. More that 1g would be additionally insane.
