Stolen Pet Parrot Reunites With Owner After Shouting Out Its Name To Cops
The Pet Zealot ^ | October 11, 2023 | James Alain L.

A remarkable reunion has taken place in France, as a stolen parrot has been returned to its owner after three long years. The parrot's clever tactic of shouting out its own name to the police played a crucial role in this heartwarming event.

When authorities seized the talkative parrot, it immediately started squawking, repeatedly uttering the name "Jako, Jako, Jako." In France, "Jako" is a traditional name for parrots, similar to the commonly known name "Polly." Intriguingly, one of the officers recalled a fellow colleague who had lost a parrot named Jako back in 2020. This officer had mentioned to his comrades that the bird would respond by saying its own name if it were ever found, as stated in the report.

Yeah, maybe the owner shoulda taught the bird to say the owner’s name? ... just spitballing ideas, here.

We had a case here locally back in the 80’s where a parrot was stolen and was recognized by its whistling the theme from The Andy Griffith Show!.............

There was a real a-hole that had a pet shop...mostly birds...in town. I was in there on time and noticed a smoke alarm low battery chirp going amid the cacophony of other bird calls. It was about every minute, just like you’d expect. It took me a while to find the culprit. I wonder if someone tried to rehome their bird after it picked up that annoying habit.

Some time later, I got the idea to call the a-holes store phone after hours, and just let it ring. Apparently there was something preventing that.

At a wedding I went to, I sat next to Irene Pepperberg who wrote the book Alex & Me: How a Scientist and a Parrot Discovered a Hidden World of Animal Intelligence--and Formed a Deep Bond in the Process and it was a fascinating discussion!

I was very curious, and asked her what it was like to live in the same household that long (around 30 years) with a parrot that I think began to view her as its mate, and she said it was like living with "a willful adolescent"!!! (She said the bird was very jealous of men who visited her house, and would attack them!)

Sitting on the other side of me was an MIT astrophysicist, and that was also very interesting from a discussion point of view!

My Fatherinlaw was stationed in Darwin during WW2. He was a Sgt in charge of the landfill area for a time. There were lots of white cockatoos in the area. The birds of course get at the dumped food and get it the way. So the soldiers working at the dump would shoo and curse them all the time. He said that in the evening when he left the dump you could hear the cockatoos cursing in the trees. “Get the f*** out of here,” and such. Maybe they are still cursing today.

Cleverness has nothing to do with it. It’s just rote behavior. Nice story though.
