The largest egg producer in the United States announced it is halting production at its Texas plant and culling the flock of nearly two million chickens.
Cal-Maine Foods announced it would halt production at its Parmer County, Texas facility after it detected bird flu at the plant.
The company destroyed 1.6 million egg-laying hens and 337,000 pullets (female chickens not yet mature enough to lay eggs) at the plant.

This is SOOOOOO moronic.
(but I’m not naive: It’s by design)
I’m going to give Brandon credit for everything that goes wrong from here on out.
Taking one for the industry, they will make it back up fast. Market price manipulation.
Driving along the highway you may see a strangely shaped building. It’s a large rectangular structure facing, say, NS. Off the side of it are five per side rectangular structures facing EW. That’s your typical chicken farm. Each of the smaller buildings has 100,000 chickens who are raised from chicks to full weight in about six weeks. The ten side buildings are completely isolated from one another. That’s because if bird flu hits the farm, it only gets 100k instead of the total million. Bird flu is the most dangerous illness for chickens.
I don’t know the present-day numbers, but back when I knew them some fifteen years ago a meat company executive said they harvested 12 million birds per day for, IIR, 360 days per year. This is why chicken meat is so cheap. If all of them were cage free boutique chickens you’d probably be looking at $10/pound. BTW, that was just one company.
Before the FR conspiracy cabal gets going, at least look up some numbers and get an idea of why executives do the things they must do to keep the business going.
Yeah, but conspiracy theories are so much more interesting than facts.
I have three hens. They give us three eggs a day.
What are the symptoms of Bird Flu?...........
There is no need to describe an egg laying plant. You can smell the ammonia well before you get there.
Interesting. Thanks for posting.
Asking questions anymore makes you a conspiracy nut. It is not a conspiracy if it is happening.
Is there a sane, knowledgeable scientist out there who can tell us whether this is needed to protect humans? (Vegans need not respond.)
Rest in peace chickens but they’re using you to torture us
Saw this on the news last night. Two million chickens. Told my wife that’s four million wings.
it’s not a conspiracy theory to observe that concentrations of power (or productive capacity, or capital, or whatever) are chokepoints and weak links in any economy.
Small and local is best for most, if not all, goods and services.
We used to raise chickens ducks and geese, and had eggs daily from all 3- small farms or hobby farms are he best. We ate very well back then. I remeber trying store bought chicken for the first time and thinking “yuck, so bland and mushy” (our chickens were on the tough side, but really good tasting)
Anyways, not sure what symptoms are- but I would think I rare for small farms tO get it unless visited by tons of wild birds.
For tough old chickens you need to use a pressure cooker...........
Yep, we also made lots of soups which would soften the meat pretty well tO. BuT I really didn’t mind having them grilled and fried either. Had good teeth back then.
A few weeks ago a poultry contractor reneged on a chicken contract and farmers had to destroy thousands of chickens. The government approved method was to suffocate the birds with foam.
Wonder why our pets are having problems with their food?
We have one 11 year old hen left from our original flock of 5. She is still laying eggs and I scramble one of hers in with 3 cage free eggs so there’s some flavor. We’re waiting til we move to our rural compound to get a new flock.
