State Elections Commissioner Suzie Terrell and state Representative Tony Perkins, both failed Republican candidates for the U.S. Senate last year, will seek statewide office in this fall's elections.
Terrell, who lost 52 to 48 percent to U.S. Senator Mary Landrieu, says she will run for attorney general. Currently, Richard Ieyoub (D) holds the positon, but is running for governor.
Terrell is a mixed big, with high name recognition and access to top GOP fundraisers, but the negative tone of last year's Senate race will likely have taken its toll on her. The only other candidate in the race is Orleans Parish Criminal Sheriff Charles Foti (D). Other possible candidates include state Sen. Jay Dardenne (R), chairman of the Senate Finance Committee, and attorney Marjorie McKeithen (D), the daughter of Louisiana Secretary of State of Fox McKeithen who lost a close race for Congress in 1998.
Terrell can not run for reelection to her current position because it is being abolished.
State Rep. Tony Perkins (R) who got 10 percent of the vote in the "open primary" Senate race, will leave the race for state treasurer and run for insurance commissioner. Perkins had been the only candidate for treasurer until incumbent John Kennedy (D) decided he would for reelection instead of seeking the governorship.
Perkins says he will not accept campaign contributions from the insurance industry, and if elected, will work to make the position appointed. He faces off against incumbent Robert Wooley (D), who moved up to the position after the previous insurance commissioner, Jim Brown (D), went to jail. Brown's two predecessors went to jail as well for various misdeeds in office.
Gov. Foster (R), who has butt heads with Perkins in the past, will endorse him in this race. Previously, Perkins had agreed to endorse Foster's choice for governor-former state and federal health official Bobby Jindal.

Excellent . . .
Now, now. You should have respect for LA voters.
Yeah, assistant, I believe. That's not abnormal, but I don't know if Foster has the power to go outside the office and install someone else. Foster has never chosen to act particularly partisan... :-P
"And why is Marjorie McKeithen a rat?"
Good question, since she seems to be a DINO. From what Theodore R. tells me, it has to do with her close relationship to her late Grandpa John, the former Governor. She is not as close to her daddy Fox, the GOP Secretary of State. As I stated elsewhere, it's not the kiss of death to remain a Conservative Dem in LA, though had she won that Congressional seat over Dick Baker, she definitely would've found herself out of step with Congressional 'Rats. I still think the GOP should try to get her to switch so she can succeed Baker if he chooses to retire.
