He did interfere as the catch no doubt would have been made had he not been there. But the big play was when Alex Gonzalez made the error.

Great game anyway, unless you're a Cub fan.

He would have made the catch, but if the Cubs really want to blow the PR game, they should blame one fan for the collapse.

That ball could easily have been fouled another 10 rows into the stands, and the score would still be the same.

Ever hear of "momentum?"

That's what happened to the Cub's momentum when the stupid fan caught the ball. It deflated faster than a helium balloon.

"Momentum" is a term used by sportscasters to keep us interested in a losing team that is showing signs of a comeback. It has almost no relevance at all to a sport which is almost purely individual like tennis or major league baseball.

While I can see baseball may not be as much of a team effort as football or even basketball, it is still very much a team sport, especially on the defensive side. Even on the offensive side, there is teamwork involved. Sacrafices, hit-n-tuns, stealing bases, breaking up double plays....

That's right. And what's more, who here among us - caught up in the excitement of a playoff fly ball coming right to them - wouldn't have tried to catch it? It was an unfortunate incident that rattled the pitcher, apparently, and unleashed the floodgates on the Cubbies.

This is really too bad. I'm not much of a baseball fan, but I do know that if the World Series is a Yankee - Marlin series the rating will be significantly lower than it will be if the Cubs or the Sox are in it. If both are in the ratings will probably be through the roof.

THAT FAN has been described as a "die hard Cubs fan" (and has now been identified in a local newspaper, by name and place of employment).

THAT FAN is not a "die hard Cubs fan."

He's a moron, a selfish, me-first idiot who gave no regard to anyone or anything but himself.

You don't sit in the front row of a ballpark without realizing you've a high probability of being near or part of the action.

You don't sit at Wrigley Field with headphones on, tuning out the game and the fans and the ballpark around you.

Said in the newspaper article to be a coach of an elite youth league team, apparently to underscore his knowledge of the game and presumed game awareness, this guy could only have been thinking of one thing -- a $12 souvenir on his mantle -- as he would have followed the arc of the ball in flight without paying any attention to where he was sitting, or the rapidly approaching Moises Alou. Without the headphones, THAT FAN would have heard Alou, heard others that the game was swiftly hurtling toward him.

Maybe had this diehard Cubs fan been around in '69, maybe if he had some perception of what 58 years (more than twice his age) feels like, maybe then he'd have realized more what winning last night meant to legions of Cubs fans everywhere. Maybe he ought to take a gander at the Chicago Tribune photo online of the 9-year old boy moments after the game with his Dad, the pair traveling from Kansas to see the Cubs take their first NL flag in nearly sixty years to see what his selfishness caused.

What's overlooked is his interference with the game resulted in the Marlins' Luis Castillo to remain alive, and to get on base with a walk on the next pitch. There would have been two outs in the eighth, runner in scoring position. Then it's anyone's guess what Pudge does, as the situation is different with a runner on second, two out, visitors down by three late in the game.

Feel sorry for him? Whatever happened to taking responsibility for one's actions?

That was quite the rant there.

The fan didn't lose the game, the Cubs choked. Most thinking people realize that.
