Online lovers both lied about their age

A 71-year-old man who cut 15 years off his age to try to woo girlfriends online in China is to marry a woman who's 20 years older than she claimed to be.

The 68-year-old woman claimed to be 48 when she chatted over the internet with the grandfather for three months before agreeing to meet him, according to the Information Times in southern China.

The pair were so embarrassed at having lied about their ages that they sent a son and daughter in their place to the rendezvous in Guangzhou.

But, after the children came clean, the couple met and now plan to marry during the Lunar New Year holiday in late January.

I never understood the point of lying about your age/gender/looks to someone online. If you do fall in love, you'll eventually want to meet. A lie is not a good way to start a relationship.

The reason is undoubtedly fear of rejection at the outset on the basis of age. Of course, your point of it not being good to start a relationship on a lie is well made.

If you're a 70 yo looking to start a relationship with someone in their 30's or 40's, state it up front. While most 30/40 yo wouldn't be interested, some might be. Better to be up front and face rejection before sparks begin to fly than have to confess your deception later on. Rejection is always a possibility in all human relationships. Isn't it much better to be accepted for who you really are?

I agree with you fully; however, I think the reason I stated is still valid.
