This is already old news, but it's a reminder of what's coming... (I downsized the image so it would fit on a "regular-sized" browser window. Click on the image to see the full-size version, which can be further expanded in most browsers by clicking right on the image.)

And let's remember that Charley was a strong hurricane, but not a big one.
Even if it's a house boat? :-)
I should mention, clicking on the article link in the header goes to page about the study of Charley's coastal impact, with more pictures and maps.
What are you talking about? All you need is some federally-funded conservation efforts, the occasional insurance payout, and flyers urging residents to "SAVE THE ISLAND!" or whatever. Piece of cake. Mother nature doesn't stand a chance. < /sarcams >
Neat pic.
FYI.
John's Pass between Treasure Island and Madeira Beach in Pinellas County, Florida, is a big barrier-island breach from a massive 19th century storm. In fact, I think I posted some links about that in an earlier "Geology Picture of the Week". Yes, I did. I'll provide the link in a subsequent post.
exactly.
That used to be a neighborhood there in the bottom right.
Le cône gronde à nouveau ("the cone thunders again")
A spatter cone developed at the flow front by the ocean; great pics (scroll to the bottom for more)
Storm surge is NOT GOOD! (except maybe if you're a beach geologist)
It's why I always put off mowing the lawn, painting the house, shower....
To which of my astute observations were you referring?
"...not meant to build..."
Wasn't there a parable in the Bible about the man who built his house upon a rock and the man who built his house upon the sand?
Yes indeed. A parable a lot of people in Florida are going to remember. This is one verse that definitely sounds best in the KJV. Matthew 7:25-27.
And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock.
And every one that heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand:
And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell: and great was the fall of it.
