Confederate States Of America (2005)
Yahoo Movies ^ | 12/31/04 | Me

What's wrong about this photo? Or if you're a true-born Southerner, what's right?

While scanning through some of the up and coming movies in 2005, I ran across this intriguing title; "CSA: Confederate States of America (2005)". It's an "alternate universe" take on what would the country be like had the South won the civil war.

Stars with bars:

Suffice to say anything from Hollywood on this topic is sure to to bring about all sorts of controversial ideas and discussions. I was surprised that they are approaching such subject matter, and I'm more than a little interested.

Some things are better left dead in the past:

For myself, I was more than pleased with the homage paid to General "Stonewall" Jackson in Turner's "Gods and Generals". Like him, I should have like to believe that the South would have been compelled to end slavery out of Christian dignity rather than continue to enslave their brothers of the freedom that belong equally to all men. Obviously it didn't happen that way.

Would I fight for a South that believed in Slavery today? I have to ask first, would I know any better back then? I don't know. I honestly don't know. My pride for my South and my heritage would have most likely doomed me as it did so many others. I won't skirt the issue, in all likelyhood, slavery may have been an afterthought. Had they been the staple of what I considered property, I possibly would have already been past the point of moral struggle on the point and preparing to kill Northern invaders.

Compelling story or KKK wet dream?:

So what do I feel about this? The photo above nearly brings me to tears, as I highly respect Abraham Lincoln. I don't care if they kick me out of the South. Imagine if GW was in prayer over what to do about a seperatist leftist California. That's how I imagine Lincoln. A great man. I wonder sometimes what my family would have been like today. How many more of us would there be? Would we have held onto the property and prosperity that sustained them before the war? Would I have double the amount of family in the area? How many would I have had to cook for last week for Christmas? Would I have needed to make more "Pate De Fois Gras"?

Well, dunno about that either. Depending on what the previous for this movie are like, I may or may not see it. If they portray it as the United Confederacy of the KKK I won't be attending.

This generation of our clan speaks some 5 languages in addition to English, those being of recent immigrants to this nation. All of them are good Americans. I believe the south would have succombed to the same forces that affected the North. Immigration, war, economics and other huma forces that have changed the map of the world since history began.

Whatever. At least in this alternate universe, it's safe for me to believe that we would have grown to be the benevolent and humane South that I know it is in my heart. I can believe that slavery would have died shortly before or after that lost victory. I can believe that Southern gentlemen would have served the world as the model for behavior. In my alternate universe, it's ok that Spock has a beard. It's my alternate universe after all, it can be what I want.

At any rate, I lived up North for many years. Wonderful people and difficult people. I will always sing their praises as a land full of beautiful Italian girls, maple syrup and Birch beer. My uncle ribbed us once before we left on how we were going up North to live "with all the Yankees". Afterwards I always refered to him as royalty. He is, really. He's "King of the Rednecks". I suppose I'm his court jester.

So what do you think of this movie?

ftD: These guys fail to understand the nature of an open forum. It's much like a panel discussion. The discussion is as much for the benefit of the audience, as for the people in the conversation. That is especially true when dealing with the illogical and the unreasonable.

[GOPcap] "your transvestite hero" (Lyon disguised in a dress)
[Capitan_refugio] I made no reference to Jefferson Davis, nor is he my hero.

You guys are too funny! I should have known you can't tell the difference between a barb and a factual post. Makes sense, though. You rarely make factual posts!

On the more serious side, my barb still made no reference to Jefferson Davis wearing a "dress". GOPcrapitalist used the term "transvestite." "Transvestite" is a term used for a personal who receives sexual gratification from wearing the clothing of the opposite gender. Davis was caught wearing clothing of the opposite gender (a woman's cloak), but he, like Lyon, was in disguise. I certainly don't think he was wearing the cloak because of some kinky fetish.

However, that doesn't explain why you are posting today while wearing a red thong.

... none of the items produced by your very diligent keyword search are comments about Bush.

ROTFL!!!!!! YOU wrote, 'Since no comments about Bush [pro or con] have been made on this thread, he must be referring to comments made somewhere else.'

I simply pointed to a few - even ignoring the taglines - especially #296 where GOPCapitalist EXPLICITLY commented on Bush, 'Why don't you ask President Bush? I'm sure he'd give you lots of reasons for the war he started in Iraq, and most of them would probably be very convincing.'

Furthermore, none of the comments you produced were in any way negative toward Bush...

Your comment was that 'no comments about Bush [pro or con] have been made on this thread'

Let me add that for your diligence in seaching through this 5000 post thread for the word Bush in order to build your casus bellum against me, you are now now on the short list to replace NoClue Chan as the neo-confederate cultist's number one stepandfetchit'. Congratulations.

Do I get an award? Searching the first 300 was easy.

347 was by GOPCapitalist:

Cap'n R has also sided with all sorts of leftist vermin and will always do so as long as they share his hatred for the south. Among the sources he's quoted in support of his opinion are a new age Berkeleyite law professor, a slavery reparationist "historian" who was on the payroll of the ACLU and SPLC in their case to remove the Alabama Ten Commandments statue, and several run of the mill left wing Democrat academic types. He's also spoken favorably of one of his old allies in these debates - the now-banned ex-freeper and outed neo-nazi known as "#3fan" (#3fan was zotted last summer after we tracked him down posting articles and links from an Aryan nation group that he belonged to) and he still pings the infamous "WhiskeyPapa" to his south bashing posts by Freudian slip from time to time. "WhiskeyPapa" was a notorious south basher on FR for several years before getting zotted last summer as well after he went on the warpath against President Bush and outed himself as a far-left conspiracy zone Democrat ("WhiskeyPapa" was last seen on usenet a few months ago talking about how Michael Moore was one of his heroes, Lincoln being the other).

"And in 1787 that 'union' was abandoned, a new union was formed from any 9 that chose to SECEDE from the 13 Reagan referred to."

That's not what Thomas Jefferson said. He and Madison clearly place the beginnings of the Union in 1776.

you are 100% correct. damnyankees like "le chef" are BIGOTS/MORONS/HATERS.

otoh, we dixie folks put up with your DUMB ad homiminum attacks, pretty well.

if nothing else, "Chef Dejuan" is good for a laugh at HIS expense. (i tend to give "le chef du M. Mcdonald's" a "little room", as he's a CLUELESS 18YO kid & a victim of the "publick screwl sistim." it's NOT his faul;t that he's IGNORANT of BOTH history & logic. it is the SYSTEM's fault)

Where are the other two reviews?

Scroll up the thread to late last week. The other two were from legal journals - Michigan Law Review and another. Unfortunately I don't have the time right now to search for them again.

Regarding Bensel, Neely writes

Consider the source, who is himself "captive to the myth of Lincoln infallability"
