New Battlestar Galactica Starts Tonight

The British have been watching Ron Moore’s reimagined “Battlestar Galactica” since October (and get its 12th installment Monday). But at least America's tardy SciFi Channel is good enough to kick off the show’s first regular season Friday night with two new back-to-back hours. The reviews are pretty spectacular. (Even original “Galactica” actor Richard Hatch stopped badmouthing the new series after it cast him as a guest star!) The critics speak:

The new series is soooooo much better than the original. The concept was always riveting, but with 21st century effects and a few new twists, like the human looking cylons, it's great TV.

aww comeon on Space 1999 was fantastic. I had the worst childhood nightmares after watching "Dragon's Domain". UFO was cheesier if you were into Gerry Anderson Brit Sci Fi.

The effects are so good as to make any of the new Star Trek shows look lame.

BUT - one that I haven't seen, and would really like to, is the "Return of Starbuck" episode. Kinda wanted to see what happened to my favorite cigar-chomping, hard drinking womanizer from BSG:TOS.

You've actually seen that episode already, and in a far better format. The BSG 80 episode is just a replay of the episode where Starbuck is stranded on a planet and rebuilds a cylon for companionship. The only difference is that it has a BSG 80 intro and outtro. It's supposed to explain the brainiac kid that the bearded Adama looks to for advice.

My only fear is that those effects (along with the sets and huge cast) might make the show too expensive. That's what doomed the original BG -- it got good ratings, but was too expensive. The new one could do far better ratings-wise than say, Stargate, but still not be profitable.

Exactly, anyone who says that the new BG is "pc" hasn't thought of the ramifications of taking two popular black characters, and making one Asian and the other John McCain. Very un-pc. Starbuck is a woman for story reasons, not to satiate the PC mob.

Uh, Apollo is male. People who criticize things they haven't ever seen amuse me.

I believe I have heard the cost per episode ranges in the $1.3 million area (I believe Enterprise is somewhere around $1.6-1.8), and the Bristish Channel Sky One funds a generous portion of that, which will greatly increase the odds of Skiffy deciding to pay for a second season.

Somewhat on topic, does anyone else find it amusing that Skiffy advertises "The Biggest Night in Sci-Fi EVER!" on a channel that is meant for Sci-Fi?

Still, I'd wager that you haven't watched the full mini. I've seen all 11 episodes, and it only gets better.

Still, you'd be right.

I didn't say it was bad. I said I wasn't interested since they PCd it by making (Starbuck) a female. Starbuck is even a worse choice than Apollo to PC out -- he was a horn dawg and I don't see a woman being so without bugging me.

You had to be there in 1978 when it first came on to understand the importance of the original. And in 1980 to watch it get destroyed by "Galactica 1980."

No thanks, I'll take a pass.

Too bad. If there's one thing that this show ISN'T, it's PC. Best Sci Fi on TV in years.

It's going to be on 10 pm Fridays, Which blows

By definition, based on this post, you are on the internet. Get a News Reader. Check Alt.Binaries.multimedia.scifi.

You will be able to see them whenever you need to. You wanna see episodes that won't show in the US till April? Go get them tonight.

If that bothers you get a TIVO.

If that's an issue get a VCR. They sell for about $1.98, nowadays.

Welcome to the second half of the twentieth century. We'll introduce you to the 21st century gradually, to be gentle.

".... and new series has, that the original did not have, is the undercurrent of sheer apocalyptic horror and desperation that would come from seeing one's homeworlds nuked and one's people slaughtered."

The new series also has Grace Park, so I'll be watching ;) I like her a whole bunch!

I do agree with your comments though, I think the new Battlestar Galactica is quite good. BG and 24 are the only two series this season I have so far set up to DVR every new episode.

Gee thanks, I'll have to see if I can get one of these new fangled VCR thingys you were talking about.

But seriously, It blows because of Friday night especially @10pm is generally not the best rating period (Especially among the 18-34 male group) and I'm concerned that it won't get good ratings and end up being cancel led. Screw the Stargates, If they are going to put it on Friday they should put it on 8 or 9 pm

In fairness, some Freepers will be pissed that the show's heros are secular polytheists and the Cylons are religious judeo-christian monotheists.

That being said, it's still crazy good and, on the whole, neoconservative.

Btw, I say judeo-christian in the sense that much of their moral code seems judeo-christian (i.e. suicide being a mortal sin, etc.).

Yah, I deserved the razzy's for the smart ass remark about VCRs. Sorry. Couldn't resist

And yah, the time slot sucks. I'll watch, whether "live" or through one of the mechnisms I mentioned (I have access to episodes 1 to 12, though I haven't watched them yet).

It's a shame they can't figure that stuff into the ratings.

I know there are a lot of folks who hate it, but it's a shame to see Enterprise put up directly opposite SG1. I hope they let Enterprise get in it's full 7 years. They finally had the brains to get rid of Brannon/Braga and the new guy really seems to understand the idea behind SF.
