I need some help with CD drives (Vanity)
February 12, 2005

Posted on 02/12/2005 1:50:43 PM PST by Howlin

I put a music CD that came with a book into my computer last night, played, and now my computer won't recognize either my CD or my CD writer.

I've tried everything; Norton, Restore, rebooting.

Does anybody have any suggestions about what I might try now?

"So, can we all get together next Saturday night and do our taxes?"

LOL! Glad your problem is fixed, Howlin. I applaud your composure throughout the process. My solution after an hour would have been a hammer.

It is a great case for the price, there are some good reviews of it, and it can HOLD stuff!

2.4 Ghz; 256 MB RAM; Pentium 4; 80 GB hard drive.

Am I just backing up my files?

If you use an imaging program to back up your entire hd, then often you would need several cd's to burn, and there is always the possibility of a bad cd, or like the problem you had tonite.

A 2nd hd would be faster to backup and restore from, several images can be stored on them and is another safeguard for important data rather than just relying on a cdrw. Forget tape drives, they are horribly slow, outdated hardware.

I really do love it; I'm completely self-taught on computers; I have about six I keep up for family; my stepdaughter has a brand new Dell sitting in the box, waiting for ME to set it up. I can't wait to start deleting stuff from it......LOL.

So, add a second hard drive to what I have, and use it, along with imaging software, to backup what I already have?

Yup, you need more ram, 256mb is really a minimum for xp, your cpu is fast enough. Get another 256mb and it will improve your speed noticeably.

It must be a XP glitch.

Most of what I see is 98. People bring me upgraders. I am guessing the CD driver replacement process is flawed somehow. I will keep it in mind. You should not need to get into the registry to do that.

interesting........

G'nite.(I am a perfectionist nut)

Read this:

Acronis TrueImage 6.0

You would build a mirror image....of the operating system and all the files....

Your system is small....you definitely need more RAM...what are you doing with that high powered software package from SONY? Is that what is slow?

Glad to hear the good news. Editing the registry is tricky, but you did it!

Sorry I couldn't help more. While you were fixing Bill Gates's problems, we were watching Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow.

If I come to your house and you turn your back, I will clean off our Desktop and organize your Start Menu. :-)

You may have done more with XP than I have....

What do you do with the SONY package? How fast is it?

Yes, Imaging software makes a snapshot of your entire hd and stores it in one file, and restores it EXACTLY the way it was, this is especially useful if you suspect a virus/trojan on your current setup or have problems like tonite where xp interferes with the restore process, like registry settings.

TrueImage, incredibly easy to use, incremental backups etc.

Norton Ghost, which is really a composite of Powerquest's DriveImage and the previous Ghost.

These can be bought online and downloaded right to your pc, so no need to go shopping for them.
