The Hobbit Hole XX - And take the hidden paths that run...
The Freeper Hobbit Hole ^

Posted on 03/05/2005 11:51:13 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

And take the hidden paths that run...

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

I have no idea. I didn't even know there *was* a LOTR version. This alone scares me a little.

I got to be Galadriel (I think), elf-boy was Gandalf, and PE picked Gimli. You can play it short using The Ring, or the usual way unyil everyone runs out of power (i.e. money).

Wife is interested in something "Palm Pilot-ish" to mainly keep track of her schedule and email.

Can the email be downloaded from the PC for later browsing/answering from the device? You can get Palms with wireless email capability, but the service is pricey. If you just want to transfer to/from the PC, Palms can do that now. Everything else is within the capability of the Palm.

That's the Palm Zire 31, with a list price of $150. You can go with the Zire 21 for $100, but it's only a black and white screen, and color spoils you real fast.

Prices for other models go up from there. There are also closeouts on recently-discontinued models, like the T3.

It looks like the Hobbit Hole knife project is changing again, and again for the better, I hope.

I'm down to about 35 Ka-Bar pocket knives from the original lot of 100. Time to rebuild the inventory. This time, I think we can do quite well with Camillus pocket knives, based on the great support (and deals) they've given us in their sheath knives.

I'm considering the Camillus "Sierra" in medium and large sizes. Both retail in the $25 range, and I hope we can do better than that. Here's a picture of the two, along with the Ka-Bar folder.

The small one is a bit smaller than the Ka-Bar, and the big one's a LOT bigger. The big Sierra could even be a good substitute for a sheath knife in the field (but not as a fighting knife). Here's another view.

And here's the bigger knife alongside the CQB3 and BK3. It's not dainty.

There are pros and cons to these knives. The "pros" are they're American-made, and we can probably get a great price on them. The biggest "con" is that these are "economy" knives, and the most of the economizing is done with the blades. The blades are stamped and ground, rather than fine-blanked. The blade thickness is a bit less, too. The steel takes a good, sharp edge, and is probably about the same grade as the Taiwan-made Ka-Bar. The handles are fatter and more contoured, which is probably a good thing, since it makes it more comfortable and secure to hold. Both have pocket clips, and both can be opened with one hand. Everything is riveted together, which is stronger, but cheaper, than using screws.

If I can get a good deal on these knives, they will become our standard folding knives for our project. A minor problem is the big "Sierra" logo on the front of the blade. If I can't get our new Hobbit Hole logo to work well on the front, it may have to be put on the back. These two sample knives go to the engravers this afternoon, and I'll find out then.

Comments or suggestions are always welcome. And if you want one for yourself, or someone else, please freepmail me. Pray that this works out, because money saved here will be used for the sheath knives, which are becoming extremely popular with infantry.

Look forward to seeing the samples!

After the closing I'll have to send you something for this project...

Good morning!

Another cold one - just sneaking up on 5 degrees out there. Had square tires this morning.

Wanna go home. Have an awful lot of organizing and cleaning still to do.
