It's time to start the great tomato race
The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette ^ | Saturday, March 12, 2005 | Doug Oster

At night, our basement windows glow from cool fluorescent lights. Lucky gardeners spend their days bathed with warm sunlight in tiny greenhouses tending their little seedlings with a mother's love. It's spring outside, but inside the confines of the clear walls, it's a steamy summer afternoon. The aroma of the deep green leaves is intoxicating; dreams of warm red tomatoes fill their heads.

This season, my race begins with more than 20 varieties in hopes of discovering the earliest, tastiest tomato.

There's nothing like a fresh grown tomato. My dog ate my garden last year, I need a bigger fence this time around. Then again, the dog is bigger too...

There is a company called Gempler's who have very inexpensive dear fencing (7 ft. tall etc.), that when put up with just a few sturdy poles, keeps everything out...... except the things that dig under it.
