Funniest commercial ever--Pepsi's new ad
Me | 5/7/2005 | Me

Just saw a howlingly funny new Pepsi ad set in ancient Rome. A couple of Roman soldiers ride up to a group of ragged men wearing chains. One is holding a paper bag.

"Hey, guys," says a soldier, "one of you left this behind at the last rest stop. There's half a sandwich here, and a can of Pepsi. I think the guy's name is written on the bag. Yeah, it says Spartacus. Anybody here named Spartacus?"

Cut to Kirk Douglas standing up and saying, "I'm Spartacus," then Tony Curtis, then the rest of the crowd. It's the actual scene from the movie, with modern actors layered in on top.

It's a total hoot. I laughed so hard I nearly choked.

I think that one was first aired during the Superbowl.

Sounds like the scene from Monty Python's Life of Brian.

"I'm Brian! I'm Brian! . . .I'm Brian and so's my wife! . . . ."

I still like the Darrell waltrip comercials. My favorite is the guy confessing that he booed Waltrip in the 70's. Then it cuts to waltrip saying "no problem" and spinning doughnuts on the guys front lawn. "sincerely, Darrell Waltrip"

It's kind of funny, but if you remember this scene in the movie, it's a misuse of the material. It was a truly touching scene, as they were all "volunteering" to be crucified, in order to take the victory away from the Romans.

I find the Kodak commercial "But wheres the computer?" to be one of the best I've seen. Really gets the point across that you dont necessarily need a puter to make digital pics.

Cut to Kirk Douglas standing up and saying, "I'm Spartacus," then Tony Curtis, then the rest of the crowd.

In the director's edition of the ad, the final scene showed everyone who piped up being crucified by Coca-Cola swilling Centurions.

(You'd think Pepsi would have watched the movie and understood what that scene was all about? Maybe being nailed to a tree ain't that big a thang anymore to the deep blue city dwelling ad-writers....)
