It seems like mainstream rock has been faltering as of late. Rock stations in major markets like Philadelphia have changed formats It isn't helped by the fact that hip hop/R&B is what is mainly marketed to young people these days, and that's what they like. In the music industry in general, there hasn't been an actual brand new genre since new wave/synth pop hit in the late 1970s and 1980s.
At the same time, there are "new" bands that are playing what has been described as "post punk" or "neo New Wave." These bands include the Bravery, Franz Ferdinand, Bloc Party, and the Killers. They're not playing anything groundbreaking, since this genre dates from the late 1970s. In my opinion, however, it's nice to hear something "fresh," unlike the neo-punk acts like Green Day, et al.
There are other acts like Audioslave that are still going strong without the music scene backing them up.
Will bands like the Killers start a revival of rock, or will it continue to founder?
A scary though is an 80 year old man listening to Alice in Chains 40 years down the road. (me)

If by "as of late", you mean "for the last 15 years", then yeah - I agree.
Rock is dead. Only Jesus could Lazarus it back to life.
I never really got into them. I was more of a Soundgarden/Nirvana/Stone Temple Pilots guy in my early teens.

I like them too and Megadeth and Metallica (up to reload) I liked Tool a lot.
Nah, there's plenty of good rock music. It just can't be found on the radio.
Did/Do you like RATT? I don't think I've heard much by them, and unlike Van Halen/Guns and Roses/et al, they're not as well known today.
Not as scary as a bunch of 50 and 60 year olds runing out to buy tickets to the latest Rolling Stones concert.

I stoppped listening to 'new' music 10 years ago. The last new band I liked was "Live". Their "Throwing Copper" album was pretty good.
I heard a Steely Dan song the other day on our local Oldies station.
I know I'm in trouble when Steely Dan is considered "old".
I'm convinced there was a point in the mid 80's that rock music was perfected. Everything that's come after it is rehashed and recycled.

AIC, IMO, was the absolute best of the 'grunge' bands. Too bad Layne Staley got hooked on heroin. Did you know that when they found his body, he'd been dead (OD'd) for over 2 weeks!? Not many friends did he make, apparently.

I bought George Lynch's "rEvolution" from his website and was happy to hear him still thrashing on the guitar. I was a big Dokken fan, but mostly for Lynch's incredible talent.
I was listening to Skid Row's "Slave to the Grind" just the other day and was reminiscing on just how pure Sebastian Bach's vocals are/were...Ahh..youth.
If you can't dance then you're no friend of mine. LOL
