I am interested in the personal opinions of any FReepers who have spent time in Costa Rica. Hubby and I have been doing research into the country to gather information for a possible extended family adventure.
I have corresponded with others who have spent time there, and now I want the FReeper take on it. I trust you guys. Well, most of you anyway!

Hey you. As for Costa Rica, I know nothing. Traveling abroad scares me these days.
Good to see you on here. I have just returned from a 10 day vacation and was having FR withdrawal.

Many years ago I visited Costa Rica (1970's) and it was a wonderful experience. Great unexploited beaches on the Caribean side, good food, water purification comprable to the states in San Jose, and lots of Americans holding property and running business. A tropical climate similar to Hawaii.
The way they like to drink beer is with a lime marinated fish dish (cheveche), one taste invites the other till you run out of both.
That was years ago, but I plan to revisit to see how much of the good things are still there.

Costa Rica? There ain't nothing in Costa Rica but queers and steers. Have you got horns on your head?
You and hubby will be back for the '08 elections, right?
And what about a wedding that will be taking place in the Midwest section of the USA? What are you going to do about that? Uh?

I've been six times ans love the place. I have stayed in the Guanacaste region 4 times and in the interior rainforest region twice. CR is somewhat of an anathema to typical Central American countries. Crime seems to be pretty low and public corruption doesn't seem to occur at all. You really need to look into the proerty laws though. They tend to heavily favor the natives and leave foreign interest with little recourse if you run astray. On the up side, land is cheap and the cost of living is ultra cheap. You could live like royalty there on $1000 a month.

A beautiful place, but one word of caution. Do not feed the Dinosaurs.

I will be curious to hear how it goes as my wife and I are considering a vacation there next year also. We know very little at this point.

Well, it is a very popular destination for those looking for an alternative to the Moonlight Bunny Ranch, if you get my drift.

From what I have been able to gather, I don't think you would find things much different. I am sure the tourist places have grown, but I think the other areas are about the same.
I can't wait to go and check it out.

Not going for the extended period for a while. Will be around for the weddin'.
Ideally, I would like to be gone during the elections, and vote by absentee ballot.
And I doubt the queer factor would be tolerated well down there. : )

I have a couple of ins with some folks who have married Costa Rican's, so I am not going into the property thing as the average glassy eyed gringo. I am very interested in getting my kids away from the crappy American pop culture for a while, and teaching them how to appreciate another culture.
In your experience, which area do you prefer?

Great place, I'm planning on spending some time there soon.
As for living there, its getting pricey, try Nicerauga or El Salvador for buying land.
