Last night I was pickin my banjo, drinkin a beer and enjoying a dip of Copenhagen and started thinkin bout my all time favorite C&W songs. You know, the ones you don't get tired of listening to.
This is my top 5.
5. He Stopped Loving Her Today by George Jones
4. You're Not the Best by Charlie Robison
3. Rodeo by Garth Brooks
2. Amarillo by Morning by George Strait
1. Song of Wyoming by Chris LeDoux
Arlington
Courtesy of the Red White and Blue
5. Red Headed Stranger by Willie Nelson
4. When the Man Comes Around by Johnny Cash
3. I Believe by Don Williams
2. Luchenbach,Texas by Waylon Jennings
1. Devil Went Down to Georgia by Charlie Daniels
This was a hard list to put together. It is subject to change depending on my mood.
Country music? I thought the two terms were mutually exclusive..... ;-)
Just kidding.
4. Mama's Don't Let Your Babies Grow Up To Be Cowboys by Waylon and Willie
3. Distant Drums by Jim Reeves
2. Crazy by Patsy Cline
1. San Antonio Rose by Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys
Another favorite is "Whiskey River" done by Willie Nelson live on the Willie and Family Live Album. On the same album is Johnny Paycheck doing is signature song: "Take This Job and Shove It" which is another classic, and as it happens seems to go through my head every time I talk to my boss.
Sunday Morning Comin' Down
Tecumseh Valley
He Stopped Loving Her Today
My Old Friend The Blues
1. Stand By Your Man
2. D.I.V.O.R.C.E.
3. Going Back to Texas (to be one more horse's a**) (by Bobby Bare, now Axis Cindy's theme song)
4. Ring of Fire
5. Coal Miner's Daughter
In no particular order ...
Honky Tonk Angels - Kitty
Ring of Fire - Johnny
He Stopped Loving Her Today - George
Your Cheatin' Heart - Hank
Crazy - Patsy
Patsy Cline's "I Fall to Pieces" can't be beat for emotional expression, vocal quality and lyrics.
IMHGLO ;)
Coward of the county
The Gambler.
Becky
It's the cowboy way. :~)
Great country song. It's already made several lists.
How could 'Tennessee Waltz' miss, or 'Folsom Prison Blues' or 'Your Cheatin' Heart' or 'Ghost Rders in the Sky'?
Ping!!
It didn't miss your list.
Love the way my husband sings it on Karaoke night. : )
For comisc value, "The I-95 song"(the A$$hole song)
Roses for Mama -- C.W. McCall
Hello Country Bumpkin -- Cal Smith
Okie From Muskogee -- Merle Haggard
On the Wings of a Dove -- Ferlin Husky
He'll Have to Go -- Jim Reeves
Bonus pick
El Paso -- Marty Robbins
It's pretty obvious that you can't make a list of just five of the greatest country songs.
It's also obvious that the writing in country songs has just stomped the crap out of the writing of rock and pop songs.
Put your sweet lips a little closer to the phone
Let's pretend that we're together, all alone
I'll tell the man to turn the jukebox way down low
And, you can tell your friend there with you, he'll have to go
Look how much you know that the singer doesn't even tell you in spoken words.
ANYTHING Jimmy Buffett rules! (See my tagline)
Amarillo by Morning
I've got Friends in Low Places
The Gambler
Jose Cuervo
Watermellon Crawl
Great list! Here are some more:
Sunday Morning Coming Down - Johnny Cash
Beaches of Cheyenne - Garth Brooks
Tequila Town - Brooks & Dunn
Walking After Midnight - Patsy Cline
My Son Calls Another Man Daddy - Hank Williams, Sr.
Okie from Muskogee - Merle Haggard
He Stopped Loving Her Today - George Jones
Weed with Willie - Toby Keith
You Can't Make a Heart Love Somebody - George Strait
Well, I have two favorite voices in country music...George Jones, and Don Williams...the song He Stopped Loving Her Today, is one of my favorites...its just perfect...
Just about anything Don Williams sings is a favorite of mine...he has a perfect smooth voice...a few of his songs that are my favorites, are Amanda, Good Ole Boys, and my absolute favorite, Gypsy Woman(a tune rarely, if ever found on any of his CDs, but an absolute favorite of every Don Williams fan)...
While Johnny's voice and phrasing are a huge part of what makes 'Sunday Morning Comin' Down' worthy of this list, it is worth noting that the tune was penned by Kris Kristofferson - who was cruelly cursed with an inability to decently sing any of the wonderful songs he wrote.
"...'Tennessee Waltz' miss, or 'Folsom Prison Blues' or 'Your Cheatin' Heart'..."
These three songs are dedicated to former Tennessee State Senator John Ford. Anyone familiar with Ford will catch my drift.
Well, Buffett's kinda country.
Speaking of Buffett, I guess I'll have a hurricane party tonight.
I'm due east of Lake Okeechobee (the little circle in the lower middle).
And I know Buffett isn't really country. I just wanted to add that title to your thread.
My favorites are Patsy Cline, Hank Williams, Merle Haggard and Johnny Cash.
I abso-frickin-lutely despise new country.
'Tryin' To Reason A With Hurricane Season'...great song. "...I stood up and tried to focus, I hoped I wouldn't have to look far; I knew I could use a bloody-mary, so I stumbled next door to the bar..."
AMEN!!! New country sucks. The only one even appealing at all is Toby Keith, but his Ford commercials suck. And he did those crappy 10-10 commercials with Terry Bradshaw a while back. And to bring everything back around again, didn't Terry Bradshaw release a country album?
Ahhh,
Come on hun,
Doncha just LOVE 'country' singer Shania...
(hrmpt, if 'she's country, I'm Queen Mother of Planet Sorbet)

Red Dirt Road
Amarillo by Morning
The Race is On
Cherokee Fiddles
Faded Love (by Patsy Cline or Bob Wills)
Hey, Good Lookin'
Jambalaya (on the Bayou)
Stay All Night (stay a little longer)
Too many good ones to limit to five (or ten)
Oh, and King of the Road.
I don't know the five best, but Leavin' Louisiana in the Broad Daylight.
Most of it has gone strictly to the formula, but there are a few that still make good country music.
Toby Keith, Alan Jackson, George Strait are still making good songs. I like Gretchen Wilson and Trick Pony, too.
The first country song I remember hearing, as a kid, was "Tennessee Waltz". My parents would dance to it, and I would dance with the dog.
Are they still around?
Lee Greenwood's "God Bless the USA".
I really don't know. Hopefully they're still around (slinging hash at IHOP.)
Shania Twain is nothing more than a package, all wrapped up in whore clothes to sing, very badly I might add, someone else's lyrics.

It is perhaps the single most-recorded country song (LOL, FReepers will confirm or deny it pretty fast).
I'm not sure anyone under 40 should be compiling such a list without passing a discography history test, LOL.
