New Orleans Mayor and Governor Blanco are incompetent (Vanity)

Posted on 08/31/2005 8:41:05 PM PDT by johnmecainrino

The Mayor and governor waited until Sunday afternoon to order evacuation orders less than 18 hours before the hurricane was going to hit. Bush himself called the mayor and told him to evacuate the city. The mayor and governor should have ordered evacuations at least the morning before.

Governor and mayor should have had a plan to bus evacuees to another state like the astrodome before the storm hit. Putting massive amounts of people in the superdome when you knew the hurricane was going to hit and take out power made no sense. Having tens of thousands of people in a hot humid place with no working toilets and no power defies logic.

The initial response to the looting was that it was that it wasn't a real priority and they were just doing it to survive when clearly a major portion were thugs. Swat team members should have gone to the french quater and downtown immediately and shown force. You kept hearing how one cop was too afraid to take on gangs of looters. SWAT teams should have been sent in. Instead the mayor, governor, cops said it wasn't a big deal. The cops needed to be ordered right from the beginning that looters would be handled aggresively to stop it from going to carjackings, stealing guns, looting hospitals, armed gangs. The lack of message was so bad the cops themselves were in on the looting.

You hear that there is no place to put the prisoners, there are many prisons in the state that the mayor should have had contingency plans for.

We keep hearing about the national guard why didn't the governor ask other states before hand that she wanted more guard if she needed it. Guard is under governor's control stateside and I never heard her say the guard she be used for law enforcment.

Media keeps blaming FEMA, Bush ordered unprecedented emergency declarations before the storm hit and fema was on the ground. Problem is the local officials are corrupt and incompetent.

Also you keep hearing about the levee, the corps was told to only build for cat 3 protection, and the erosion from home developments has taken away the buffer zone of wetlands that used to better help protect New Orleans. One million acres has been lost.

Gov. Blanco seems like a nice lady... wouldn't mind having her teach third-graders or something... but hardly up to the task at hand.

There are plenty of women who could do this job (Condi Rice comes to mind), but Ms. Blanco doesn't seem like one of them.

I agree...and to make matters worse, they made extraordinary statements prior to the disaster about how prepared they were; that they had a plan (just like Kerry)
Why didn't they BUS people out of New Orleans with the transit system when they issued the mandatory evac?..Even if they didn't get everyone, they could have gotten more people out who didn't have cars, etc.

Initally, they thought they had dodged the bullet again...util the levees broke. The Coast Guard has been magnificent..as has the National Guard..the the leadership has been a day late and dollar short.

Let's face it. New Orleans is a quaint city with a long history, but beneath all that tourist nonsense the place is a real sh!t-hole. It has long had a reputation for being one of the most corrupt, crime-ridden, poverty-stricken cities in the U.S.

Over the last couple of days we've had a number of posters point out that the city enjoys the bizarre distinction of having two former police officers currently on death row in Louisiana for their involvement in murders while serving as police officers in New Orleans. This includes one female officer who killed another New Orleans police officer while committing an armed robbery at a restaurant where she also killed the two Vietnamese owners.

As I've said every time I've posted this . . . you simply cannot make up the kind of sh!t that has been considered normal behavior in New Orleans for decades.

I agree. I keep picturing Jeb Bush handling this situation in LA and what a great job he would do for those people.

Governor Blanco has shown all the leadership skill of a cub scout den mother. Now she should step aside and let someone else lead. Since it would be difficult not to use profanity to describe the utter incompetence of the mayor, I will just stop typing ...

Am I wrong, or are we so far gone to the pc side, that we look the other way to anarchy and looting? They have declared marshall law in New Orleans. Usually that means looters will be subject to deadly force, if neccessary. A cop has already been shot in the face, trying to stop looters and two thugs shot up a police precinct bldg. yesterday(using ak-47's). The MSM has taken a light approach towards the looting scabs and the incompetant state and local govt. officials .

The place is full of idiots.
They have emergency power at the Superdome and hospitals that don't work during a flood because they were installed too close to ground level and get wet; they have pumping stations that don't work in a flood when the power inevitably goes out, but they WILL work on a generator IF someone can get to them in a flood.

HELLO??? Wasn't anyone thinking about what would happen during a flood???
