I didn't immediately see a topic for the tonight's (9/24/2005) episode of Realtime with Bill Maher on HBO, a show I wouldn't normally watch unless I REALLY feel like getting bent out of shape.
Tonight's guests included Chris Hitchens and Georgie "the Arabist" Galloway, and for once, there was some casual, uncensored leeway to have an adult debate (at least on Hitchen's part).
Number of times Maher insinuated Hitchens was a drunk: 3. Number of times Maher whipped the crowd into a masturbatory frenzy over the "stupidity" of Bush: 10, maybe 11. Number of times he compared Laura Bush to Hitler's dog: Once too many.
Tonight, he crossed the line in a fashion more sinister than what got him in trouble years back. In one of his segments he alluded to Bush falling back to the comforts of alcohol (a National Enquirer story?). Maher photoshopped some pics of Bush sipping Budweiser from a customized bike helmet (funny). He showed Bush's face superimposed on Nick Nolte's drunken hawaiian-shirted mugshot (funny). Then he proceeds to show a drunken Bush passed out on the floor, as if he had overindulged at a wild party--with an impish Kate Moss doing coke lines off the back of his exposed buttocks (reprimand from HBO). Finally, a portrait of Laura Bush with a bandaged face and a black eye as if an abusive Bush had battered her. (CAREER ENDING INSULT, Billy Boy).
HBO better had step up and excoriate this maniac.
Liberal: A person who thinks President Bush is stupid, but thinks Bill Maher is funny.
Just damn. I used to think Maher was funny, years ago. He's a bitter little idiot. Guess I need to search out an email address for the folks over at HBO.
I did not see it, so I cannot speak to the content, but if this is correct (which comming from maher, would suprise me) It has crossed from comentary to slander. Just how much of an audiance on HBO does he have anyway?
You watch this stuff?
HBO reprimand? Neva happen.
I saw it, even his audience was taken aback with it.
Guy hates bush 24/7.
I always liked Hitchens, he took Galloway to the cleaners.
I doubt it. He'll be praise by the Liberals, the MSN, the Left, the Michael Moores and Cindy Sheehans... just about everyone well, except us and a few more.
Maher is angry and not funny. He has lost his comedic edge and is just angry. I also hear he treats his relationships with women very badly. That reminds me of some of the male jerks of the 70's that thought they were such cool revolutionaries but were as sexist and nasty as could be in their personal lives.

Maher is not a decent person.
Be Seeing You,
Chris
I don't know about "always." Before 9/11, Hitchens was a Trotskyite, by his own admission. I like his post-9/11 views on foreign policy, but on other matters he's still very liberal. I give him credit for taking the hard line on Islamo-fascism and for properly prioritizing the War on Terror ahead of all other political issues, which most libs can't do.
I like some of the HBO programming. The Wire, Six Feet Under, The Sopranos, Deadwood and now Rome are fabulous productions. I turn Maher off as soon as he comes on. I actually try to anticipate and turn the channel before his face or voice come on. He repulses me.
I watched that FX thing "Over There" one time. What a foul leftist piece of excrement! This was the show where the "troops" ruffed up the American contractor because he disturbs the Iraqi "way of life" in some remote village. Pure lefty anti-war, anti-Bush propaganda. I may not even watch FX again.
Thanks Julie! My reply to HBO:
I keep giving Bill Maher the benefit of the doubt, but he once again went too far. Freedom of speech is a most precious gift. However when you have no class, it can be your worst enemy.
I am very disappointed in Mr. Maher's comments regarding Mr. Hitchens, President Bush, and Laura Bush.
Bill Maher has no class, and is abusing the privilege of free speech. Do something about it, before HBO is subjected to the mother of all boycotts.
Xxxx Xxxxxxx
My email to the little putz was less diplomatic, considerably.
Frankly, I'd get my attorney, sue him for slander... and bill Maher for $1 billion.
news flash-----Tsarina sleeps with Rasputin!
Maher accusing anyone of being a drunk = pot calling the kettle black
