I was 12 years old in 1960. Unlike the phony cries of the DemocRATS in the 2000 recount in Florida, in Cook County, Chicago, an election really was stolen in 1960 from Richard Nixon. Mayor Richard Daley delivered big time for John Kennedy.
Fast forward to 2005. Cook County, Chicago again. This time it is not an election, but rather the ACLS. The home plate umpire misses the call. He calls the batter out on a swinging third strike, signals again that he struck out, but blows it by allowing the runner to go to first base as the Angels run off the field.
Cook County, Chicago -- a county that will forever live in infamy.
We will never know what might have happened in extra innings, but this was no way to end a great ballgame.
NOTE: had Cook County not found a bunch of dead voters, John Kennedy might still be alive today.
You didn't really compare those two things?
That's absurd. Deeply, profoundly, absurd.
Hey, Cook County. It's the first thing that came to mind. Well, actually Mickey Owens' passed ball came to mind first, but I wanted to make it a political story to get in a shot at the stinking DemocRATS. Consider this more a political story than a sports story.
As I recall, the St. Valentine's Day Massacre occurred in Cook County . . . so did the great Chicago fire . . .
I hope there's no further comparos.
I agree emphatically, Ski.
Thanks.
Unrelated to the game, check your FM in a moment or so...
The Angels caught a break with Joe West in game 5 of the Yankee series, now the ball bounces against them. Great team, great owner, but the rally monkey is idiotic and the thunder sticks are worse.
Got it. Thanks. :-)
And Nixon was from Orange County. Hmmm... This could get Harriet off the front page at FR. :)
Two things we in cook county love, baseball and stealing elections. oh well the suburbs should have started our own county years ago. We stuck paying 9% sales tax.
Catcher's routinely tag the runner if the ball is even remotely close to hitting the ground.
Yes the ump blew it, but the catcher should have still made the tag.
Plus, a sox runner got doubled off second on a questionable call too, although that could have gone either way.
Yes, the catcher should have tagged him. But I thought that I saw the ump not only signal strike three, but then signal out with his fist. That usually indicates it was an official out.
