In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".
quidnunc \KWID-nuhngk\, noun
One who is curious to know everything that passes; one who knows or pretends to know all that is going on; a gossip; a busybody.
Example sentence:
What a treasure-trove to these venerable quidnuncs, could they have guessed the secret which Hepzibah and Clifford were carrying along with them!
--Nathaniel Hawthorne, [1]The House of the Seven Gables
Etymology: Quidnunc comes from Latin quid nunc?, "what now?"
Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.
The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....
Review Thread One: Word For The Day, Thursday 11/14/02: Raffish (Be SURE to check out posts #92 and #111 on this thread!)
Review Thread Two: Word For The Day, Tuesday 1/14/03: Roister
Review Thread Three: Word For The Day, Tuesday 1/28/03: Obdurate
WFB's attempt to emulate us ; ) No pushing at the door please!
Here is my example with WFTD.
At Free Republic, we are embedded with quidnuncs at every turn!
Rise and shine, quidnuncs and the rest of you! I am off to school today. Post away and I'll check in later.
1st?
Yes you are!
Ugh,
Coffee before my flying lesson with Potter in quidknocks.
Hoping to be such a quidnunc,
He calls intel reports to be "slam dunks",
A Tenet is he,
Who refuses to see,
His slam dunk may have been naught but bunk!
Colonel Sherman T. Potter??? ;-P
Ever notice engineers seem to run on coffee (or at least caffeine)?
I have to be of the mind that quidnunc is the perfect description for the typical 7year old child....tell me, tell me seems to be the mantra....even at 0'dark thirty in the morning :)
Good morning.
You rang?
Good Morning!
I strive to be avuncular,
Having given up on hunkular,
Who knew that through this poll,
I'd find an appropriate role,
To be nominated as quidnuncular?
People who act as though they know everything, are intensely annoying to those of us who do.
Ping! You're a WOTD!!!
Based on that etymology, I am more quovadian than quidnuncian! ;)
My favorite Freeper Lore is the thread where the famous quidnunc quidam pretended to be a Washington Insider with the skinny on the Starr Report.
Good morning, all!
Morning!
Joe Wilson is an idiot
Who lives vicariously as well
Then complains when his boasting
Brings his life a little hell
Now we see that this dumbass
Has another funny quirk-
He gets off on being a quidnunc
This delusional little jerk
He outted his wife just for thrill
And pretended they were both spies
And now he's crying foul
At being called on his lies
I'm off to work-back later...
Yeah. It's more efficient that way. No waisted motion eating.
Oh, boy, your example says it all.
Donuts are awfully good with java, though... Pretty good with any programming language, really! ;-P
Seesm to me we've all got a little bit of quidnunc within us, being FReepers and staying on it all day long....
Get up, all yunz East Coast Bums!
Top Twenny onna Worst Coast here.
GOOD MOANING
