Posted on 12/09/2005 5:50:13 AM PST by NYer
Catholic League president Bill Donohue remarked today about last nights episode of South Park (it will run again for the next three nights):
A South Park character gets a DWI and is ordered to attend AA meetings. Told about the 12-step program, he concludes that he needs a miracle to cure him. The plot then focuses on a statue of the Virgin Mary who is bleeding out her ass. The Vatican dispatches a cardinal to investigate and he is sprayed with blood when he walks behind the statue. He then declares this to be a miracle, which draws even more people. The alcoholic, now in a wheelchair, is also sprayed with blood: he then claims he is cured and jumps out of his seat.
Pope Benedict XVI goes to investigate. He, too, is sprayed with blood when he walks behind the statue. A reporter says, The pope investigated further and determined that the statue was not bleeding out its ass, but its vagina. To which the pope replies: A chick bleeding out her vagina is no miracle. Chicks bleed out their vaginas all the time.
Comedy Central is a subsidiary of MTV, which is owned by Viacom. On the board of directors of Viacom is a practicing Catholic and a distinguished public servant, Joseph A. Califano; he served under Presidents Johnson and Carter. We are writing to him today requesting that he intervene in this matter. We want a) an apology to Roman Catholics and b) a pledge that this episode be permanently retired and not be made available on DVD. In the event Viacom does not cooperate, we are asking Mr. Califano to issue his own statement of condemnation. We are asking our members to contact him as well. Remember, they chose to insult Our Blessed Mother on the eve of the Immaculate Conception, and the holy day itself.
Joseph A. Califano is chairman of the board of The National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse. He can be reached at CASA, 633 Third Avenue, NY, NY 10017; phone, 212-841-5200; fax, 212-956-8020; email, firstname.lastname@example.org.
So yes, we'll just agree to disagree and those who need directions to the shrine of the holy tortilla can easily find them on Google.
Barbra Streisand does not have icons of herself to which admirers can pray? Now, that really IS a shock! Hmm, maybe they could have used an icon of HER in the episode and have blood shooting out of HER A$$. Nah, they'd never do that. They might get sued. Ciao
If you call a bunch of sanctimonous christians threatening to punch out non believers, yes.
Feats of strength are the best!
wow, this has to be the biggest SP thread yet.
did not get to see it (i"m a devoted SP fan) stuck on 2nd shift. i am lutheran (we get bashed here alot :-) ) but i think this episode would definately make me uncomfortable.
I'm a Protestant, so while I'm disgusted at any slander of the Virgin Mary, my reaction is not the same as it would be if I were a Catholic.
Those who slander the Virgin Mary are not interested in offending me (or Jews or Muslims) but they are intent of sticking a finger in the eye of the Roman Catholic Church.
I suspect the writers of this episode dislike the Catholic Church and enjoy the discomfort their work inflicts on Catholics.
No, you're another one of those hyper sensitive liberals.
Afraid of getting SUED? Dude... They turned Barbara Streisand into a huge ugly monster robot in one episode and another episode had her real face flashing on the screen to scare people ;~D
You really are completely unaware of that which you argue about.
Frankly, I do not think that South Park really fears getting sued by anyone, and if they do, I am sure they have the revenues to deal with that...
But I just dont believe that anyone is going to sue South Park...because if they do, that will of course, call more and more attention to themselves, and how they were made fun of...people who never watched South Park before, will tune in, the episode will probably be rerun and rerun, and the person or entity doing the suing will find themselves more and more in the news, and more and more the butt of jokes...most celebrities or groups that are being made fun of, will just weather through the ridicule, and they know, that the very next episode of South Park will be skewing someone else, and someone else will be made fun of..
That's exactly right. The Schiavo ordeal snuck up on me. But the fallout from that showed me that this place isn't always what it appears to be.
That episode opened the floodgates to a lot of hostility and downright ugliness.
That's because you're smart. :~D I don't think they do either.
You mean that episode on FreeRepublic, not the Terri Schiavo episode on South Park, right?
See, I am so new to South Park, I have not yet seen the FR episode, or the Terri Schiavo episode...I have years of South Park to catch up on...
By the way, thanks for calling me smart...I believe that is the first time anyone on FR ever called me that..I have been called many other things, but never 'smart'...thanks...
Right. I'm talking only of FR here.
This place hasn't been the same since.
I'd agree that it was an ugly time here.
We lost some posters that I miss.
Luckily there are lots of opportunities for re-runs.
And your posts are always smart, articulate and on point.
The Scientology episode this season proved that. Didn't it end with Stan saying, "Sue me" to the Scientologists. And the John Doe and Jane Doe credits ... ROFLOL. Such a shame the season is already over.
Thanks about my posts...yes, indeed there is a wealth of reruns on TV...everynite on Channel 11, at 11pm, ,there are two episodes...and often the Comedy channel has reruns, so when I watch the reruns, they are like new to me...
My son has been watching South Park for years, and he did not realize that I had not been watching it all along...he was rather amused that I had only just found it...
I told the hubby, I bet our son buys me some CDs of South Park, for Christmas to get me up to speed...
I was going to suggest the season DVD's - we enjoy them a lot :~D
I just watched the tape of the show. I agree with you. It was a hilarious episode.
Oh - and BTW... it's perfectly acceptable... healthy even, if you have to turn to your hubby often and remind each other "This should not be seen by anyone :~D"
I always do get a kick out of that...of course, they know, by saying that, each and everyone of us is going to tune in...we are like children, tell us not to do something, and sure as anything, we will do it...
Yikes...cannot believe I said CDs, really meaning DVDs...my brain is rotting...
I wonder, If they lurk on FR?
Hey, Guys...a challenge. :P
7,195+ views on a chat thread, must be a record.
It is a cartoon. My faith in God rises above nonsense; I take offense to the ACLU, not cartoon imagery. I do not worship celluloid.
You think they trash Koran in upcomig South Park Hate to disagree with you if they Matt and Trey value their lives LOL! they won't
It easlier go after Saddam and Kim Jong 11
Just trying to get their attention of some self-important boobs. What makes you think that Christians are pacificists?
If you don't know why Catholics respect Mary so much, then you obviously don't know that we believe that Jesus Christ is God.
As Marlon Brando has since died, that would be in poor taste.
Haven't you read the thread? They are proud to say that they never watch SP.
They've done it before, a number of times, either the Church, or docterine.
There was the episode where Carman was on the cross, and then the episode on pedophiles in the clergy. I believe that there were others as well.
An outrage! Sick, sick, sick. I am soooo glad I canceled my cable TV over a year ago.
The latest example of media excess. Barf alert.
Atheism? I don't think that they have... Paganism? Well, sort of, in a number of episodes, if you count cults and other "odd-ball" religions. Secularism? You bet. Moral relativism? Absolutely. It's usually the little kids who make statements that are so blindingly common-sensical that it's amazing. They sometimes cut through all the moral relativistic crap. Other times, they just want to insult as many people as they can.
With a hint from "The Last Starfighter" (not the demons, but regarding the video game)
Did you see the episode yourself? If so, can you enlighten us as to the details? Was the dialogue reported accurately in the article at the top of this thread? If so, how did the episode effect you - did you find it humorous or offensive?
The reason they would not do that is the love and respect they have for Barbra Streisand
You must have missed that episode. No, I'm not kidding. It was the episode about the
Christmas winter pagent.
I've always heard it expressed as "a higher power." I'm not sure the ACLU holds much sway here.
"As a Roman Catholic (and not a watcher of South Park), I have just one thing to say...That sounds like a hoot!"
As a non-Roman Catholic (and a watcher of South Park) it was. But certainly meant to offend.
"What was the insult to the Virgin Mary?"
Well, I'm not particularly religious, so I'm not positive, but I'm pretty confident that a statue of the virgin mary bleeding from "the ass" (with farting noises) is sacrilegious in some sense.
I'll take that as a no you don't believe as some of the others, thanks.
Why did you find it necessary to call me a bozo?
It was HILARIOUS. It wasn't offensive at all. It was your typical South Park episode.
First off, it was a JOKE on all the people that see the Virgin mary in an overpass or a piece of burnt toast....
SECONDLY, is ISN'T as if Mary, be she a virgin or NOT, never menstruated.
THIRDLY, this guy is looking to extent his 15 minutes of fame after the WalMart debacle. It isn't going to work. Those that WANT to be offended by this DON'T WATCH THE SHOW ANYWAY, like yourself.
Like I said, I canceled my cable TV over a year ago and I'm glad I'm not subsidizing cable to broadcast programs like South Park. That's my last word on the topic.
The reason they would not do that is the love and respect they have for Barbra Streisand
IIRC one of the earliest "South Park" episodes featured Barbra Streisand morphing into a Godzilla-type monster intent on world domination.
Another thing, this "South Park" episode under discussion was nowhere near as offensive as the previous one in which the church officials worshipped the "Queen Spider." I am not Catholic and that watching that episode made me uncomfortable.
Don't you suppose that Jesus and Mary themselves had a sense of humor? And that they would have laughed at people lining up to be "cured" by a graven image?
Folks, as you probably know already, Our Lady was defiled, the Pope insulted, and Catholics gratuitously and grievously offended in last week's garbage show, South Park. Well, since "satire" cuts both ways, here's mine.
- Read the statement on this outrage by the Catholic League's for Religious and Civil Rights, Bill Donohue, and take action!
P.S. Sorry about the late reply on this thread, and my posting of a redundant thread here.
