VIRGIN MARY DEFILED ON “SOUTH PARK”
Catholic League ^ | December 8, 2005 | William Donohue

Posted on 12/09/2005 5:50:13 AM PST by NYer

Catholic League president Bill Donohue remarked today about last night’s episode of “South Park” (it will run again for the next three nights):

“A ‘South Park’ character gets a DWI and is ordered to attend AA meetings.  Told about the 12-step program, he concludes that he needs a miracle to cure him.  The plot then focuses on a statue of the Virgin Mary who is ‘bleeding out her ass.’  The Vatican dispatches a cardinal to investigate and he is sprayed with blood when he walks behind the statue.  He then declares this to be a miracle, which draws even more people.  The alcoholic, now in a wheelchair, is also sprayed with blood: he then claims he is cured and jumps out of his seat.

“Pope Benedict XVI goes to investigate.  He, too, is sprayed with blood when he walks behind the statue.  A reporter says, ‘The pope investigated further and determined that the statue was not bleeding out its ass, but its vagina.’  To which the pope replies: ‘A chick bleeding out her vagina is no miracle.  Chicks bleed out their vaginas all the time.’

“Comedy Central is a subsidiary of MTV, which is owned by Viacom.  On the board of directors of Viacom is a practicing Catholic and a distinguished public servant, Joseph A. Califano; he served under Presidents Johnson and Carter.  We are writing to him today requesting that he intervene in this matter.  We want a) an apology to Roman Catholics and b) a pledge that this episode be permanently retired and not be made available on DVD.  In the event Viacom does not cooperate, we are asking Mr. Califano to issue his own statement of condemnation.  We are asking our members to contact him as well.  Remember, they chose to insult Our Blessed Mother on the eve of the Immaculate Conception, and the holy day itself

“Joseph A. Califano is chairman of the board of The National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse.  He can be reached at CASA, 633 Third Avenue, NY, NY 10017; phone, 212-841-5200; fax, 212-956-8020; email, employment@casacolumbia.org.”

So what the hell are these supposed holier than thou Catholics doing watching South Park anyways?

Haven't you read the thread? They are proud to say that they never watch SP.

Good luck. Has anyone fought South Park and won? I'm surprised it took 8 years for them to start trashing the Catholic Church, they've taken on everyone else.

They've done it before, a number of times, either the Church, or docterine.

There was the episode where Carman was on the cross, and then the episode on pedophiles in the clergy. I believe that there were others as well.

An outrage! Sick, sick, sick. I am soooo glad I canceled my cable TV over a year ago.

Do they insult atheism, paganism, secularism, and moral relativism as well?

Atheism? I don't think that they have... Paganism? Well, sort of, in a number of episodes, if you count cults and other "odd-ball" religions. Secularism? You bet. Moral relativism? Absolutely. It's usually the little kids who make statements that are so blindingly common-sensical that it's amazing. They sometimes cut through all the moral relativistic crap. Other times, they just want to insult as many people as they can.

If you didn't actually see the episode, MAYBE you shouldn't judge it based on ONE MAN'S OBVIOUSLY biased opinion....

Stolen right from the plot line of Dogma BTW.

With a hint from "The Last Starfighter" (not the demons, but regarding the video game)

Did you see the episode yourself? If so, can you enlighten us as to the details? Was the dialogue reported accurately in the article at the top of this thread? If so, how did the episode effect you - did you find it humorous or offensive?

Nah, they'd never do that. They might get sued. Ciao

The reason they would not do that is the love and respect they have for Barbra Streisand

Unless South Park dared to say "Happy Holidays!", rather than "Merry Christmas!". Then we'd be demanding for gov't intervention to stop that outrageous act!!

You must have missed that episode. No, I'm not kidding. It was the episode about the Christmas winter pagent.

But didn't it require a belief in God before the ACLU got involved?

I've always heard it expressed as "a higher power." I'm not sure the ACLU holds much sway here.

"As a Roman Catholic (and not a watcher of South Park), I have just one thing to say...That sounds like a hoot!"

As a non-Roman Catholic (and a watcher of South Park) it was. But certainly meant to offend.

"What was the insult to the Virgin Mary?"

Well, I'm not particularly religious, so I'm not positive, but I'm pretty confident that a statue of the virgin mary bleeding from "the ass" (with farting noises) is sacrilegious in some sense.

I'll take that as a no you don't believe as some of the others, thanks.

Why did you find it necessary to call me a bozo?

It was HILARIOUS. It wasn't offensive at all. It was your typical South Park episode.

First off, it was a JOKE on all the people that see the Virgin mary in an overpass or a piece of burnt toast....

SECONDLY, is ISN'T as if Mary, be she a virgin or NOT, never menstruated.

THIRDLY, this guy is looking to extent his 15 minutes of fame after the WalMart debacle. It isn't going to work. Those that WANT to be offended by this DON'T WATCH THE SHOW ANYWAY, like yourself.

I believe in freedom of expression, and therefore your right to view any comedy program, whether some find it offensive or not. Maybe I'm showing my age here, but I don't remember anything this offensive being shown on TV in the 50's or 60's when we were seeing some cutting-edge stuff in magazines like Mad Magazine and National Lampoon. TV was very tame in those days.

Like I said, I canceled my cable TV over a year ago and I'm glad I'm not subsidizing cable to broadcast programs like South Park. That's my last word on the topic.

IIRC one of the earliest "South Park" episodes featured Barbra Streisand morphing into a Godzilla-type monster intent on world domination.

Another thing, this "South Park" episode under discussion was nowhere near as offensive as the previous one in which the church officials worshipped the "Queen Spider." I am not Catholic and that watching that episode made me uncomfortable.

Don't you suppose that Jesus and Mary themselves had a sense of humor? And that they would have laughed at people lining up to be "cured" by a graven image?

From the pages of Vivificat!

Folks, as you probably know already, Our Lady was defiled, the Pope insulted, and Catholics gratuitously and grievously offended in last week's garbage show, South Park. Well, since "satire" cuts both ways, here's mine.

South Park's Little Dumb Choir

- Read the statement on this outrage by the Catholic League's for Religious and Civil Rights, Bill Donohue, and take action!

P.S. Sorry about the late reply on this thread, and my posting of a redundant thread here.
