BREA, Calif., Dec. 20 /PRNewswire/ -- As the holidays and the New Year quickly approach, animal lovers may plan on adding a new pet to their family. Veterinarians from Veterinary Pet Insurance Co. (VPI) suggest that new pet owners take time to get to know their new fuzzy family member before deciding on a permanent name.
Below are the most popular names for dogs and cats for 2005 among policyholders with VPI, the nation's oldest and largest provider of health insurance for pets.
Dogs 1. Max 2. Baily 3. Buddy 4. Molly 5. Maggie 6. Lucy 7. Daisy 8. Bella 9. Jake 10 Rocky |

For the third year in a row, Max is the nation's most popular pet name, based on an analysis of VPI's 360,000 pet insurance policies.
"Many pet owners consider their pets to be members of their family. As such, they give them human names like Max, Molly or Maggie, which underscores the fact that the human-animal bond is stronger than ever," says Dr. Carol McConnell, manager of veterinary education and services for VPI. "New pet owners should spend quality time with their pets, especially in the first week, to establish daily patterns of behavior and to recognize unique traits in the pet that translate into a name, such as 'Happy' or 'Diva'."
Other suggestions for naming a new pet, says Dr. McConnell, include selecting a name that is short and easy to pronounce, and to be careful not to choose a name that is too similar to a command, such as Neil or Joe, which might be confused with "heal" or "no."

Shelley, a/k/a SHR Sumo's CoDoz Brown Bombshell, OA, OAJ, AD
Finny, Trina, and Nifi, a/k/a Chalaht's Finn MacCoul of HyBrasil, Catananda Catriona of HyBrasil, and Chalaht's Magnificat of HyBrasil. They are much too proud to earn any titles (and disinclined to work that hard for a mere human.)
We call him 'Fill' 'cuz he FILLS the box. . .
"FREEPER!"
then you'd be hounded!!!(pun intended)
I never said Logan's registered name out loud, and I was almost too embarrassed to show him. :~D
I got him as an adult, so he was already named.
I have a Corgi mixed dog named Scruffy and a some kind of breed cat named Breezy.
That's true! Course - back then, there were no FReepers :~D
"For dogs or kids?"
Yes.
The remaining alternatives were Lady Godiva and Chocolate Cheese . . . ugggh!
If I had had the naming of her, I was thinking about naming her after one of the Furies - Alecto ("unceasing"), Megaera ("the jealous"), and Tisiphone ("avenging") - or one of the Harpies - Aello, the breaking storm (Podarge - fleet of foot) or Celaeno, whose wings darken the sky before a storm (Ocypete - swift of wing).
I can just imagine the "gate" calling THOSE names out to the scorekeeper and timer! (I worked gate pretty much continually through the last trial.)
I like Brown Bombshell! It has spunk!... but why those names? The only breeders I've known with naming requirements involved naming according to the letter of the alphabet that corresponds to the litter number, i.e. first litter=A names, Second litter=B names... and so on.
I think Brown Bombshell actually fits her pretty well, because she is a looker and she's full of energy - certainly better than Lady Godiva (she's no lady, even though she has no clothes on), and Chocolate Cheese is just right out . . .
In the South, at least, it used to be traditional for hunting dogs to have classical (Greek or Latin) names. I don't think the tradition is followed any more, a lot of them seem to have rednecky/ country music sort of names now. Just got my Hunting Retriever News with the report on the Grand, and one of the winning dogs was somebody-or-other's That Thang's Got a Hemi. Made me laugh.
I had a Beagle from 1984-1998 and called him Max.
I've seen some good show names and bad... Logan's was just bad... It had "Luscious" in it.
I'll say no more :~D
That breeder should be arrested for general bad taste.
We had a defendant in a burglary case named Luscious.
Especially a male... I thought it made him sound gay. LOL
I have Sam, Sara, Blue and Penny.
Hope to have a couple more in the coming year!!
Woody the Belgian Malinois turns 12 this Christmas Eve. His registered name is Crocs' Blanc's Christmas Rush. He's named after the season, and after a certain harmless, lovable little fuzzball (c;
My dog is number 3 :P
Our beagle was named Penny.
