Geology Picture of the Week, January 15-21, 2006: Chamarel Falls, Mauritius

Though this picture isn't from the Web site below, the first picture I found of this waterfall is from the Web site below. The second link is Amazing Planet's picture of Chamarel Falls. Amazing Planet has a lot of great nature photography, and I may borrow a couple more from there in the future.

In other news, the link below is to the USGS site for Augustine volcano (Alaska). They have a Webcam located on Augustine Island itself. Every now and then (it refreshes every 30 minutes), you can get a glimpse of the steaming volcanic summit. However, there was an explosive eruption yesterday, and it might have knocked out the camera on the island. The camera in Homer usually only shows clouds over Augustine.

This is NOT a picture of Jurassic Park. (But it could be.)

Use to visit a little cow creek just outside of Austin Texas like this but much smaller about a 50 ft drop but the same look and vegetation; it was one of the coolest spots I have ever enjoyed.

I just checked and the Homer camera is working -- it's sunrise and you can just make out the outline of the island, though the summit is lost in the clouds. There's a time-stamp at upper left; you can see it change in a half-hour or so.

Thanks for the info. I forgot the time frames are way later than we are on the East Coast (I'm in Savannah, Ga.) I'm going to check out the other views.

It's called Cow Creek and it is a nice area. Almost bought some property up the creek a ways.

Really? Just try AVO and use their link to the Augustine page.

http://www.avo.alaska.edu/

As a bonus, it has an amazing shot of the Augustine summit taken two days ago.

Yes, but when staring down the throat of a volcano, I'd be sure to be honest. It's not nice to fool Mother Na (BOOM)...
