Man Trapped In Toilet When Lock Freezes

BERLIN -- When a 58-year-old motorist nipped into a German highway rest stop public toilet to answer the call of nature Friday morning, he had no idea how cruel nature could be.

Off highway A6 near the town of Lichtenau in Bavaria, which has been experiencing cold weather and snow over the past few days, the man found himself trapped in the toilet stall after the lock froze while he was inside.

Unable to pry the door open, the man finally was able to explain his predicament when someone occupied the stall next to him and get them to call police on a cell phone.

After about an hour in the chilly cell, police were able to get the door open and free the man, whom they described about "thoroughly frozen through, but in good general health.

How long was he doing his business for the lock to freeze? He couldn't crawl under the stall or break through the door?

There could have been some super-cooled water in the lock, and when he disturbed the lock the water flash-froze.

I haven't been to Germany since the late '80s, but as I recall, the doors on a lot of public toilet stalls were full doors. Many were also pay toilets as well, so the locks were a lot sturdier than the ones you find here.

At least no one triple-dog-dared him to put his tongue on the lock.

I was there in the early 80's. I remember one winter the frost on the trees was so thick it looked like snow. It was almost creepy.

BTW did German TP ever get any softer?

Actually, had he not been such a sitzpinkler and stood up, faced the lock and "lubricated" it, he probably would have freed himself.

If I had a nickel for every time I was stuck in a frozen-lock restroom, I'd have, like, three nickels.
