Michelle Kwan seals spot on U.S. Olympic team

With jumps, spins and those majestic spirals, Michelle Kwan showed she is good -- and healthy -- enough today and earned one more run at that elusive Olympic gold medal.

Kwan, a South Bay native who resides in Manhattan Beach, sealed the spot on the U.S. Olympic team that she was handed two weeks ago, proving to a five-person monitoring committee that she's recovered from the groin injury that kept her out of the national championships. She performed both her long and short programs in less than 12 minutes, a quick practice session, and did every one of her jumps except the triple loop.

The 95-minute session, which included a 45-minute break, was conducted at the East West Ice Palace in Artesia, her home rink. and was monitored by U.S. Figure Skating international committee chairman Bob Horen; technical controller Charlie Cyr; world judge Paula Naughton; international judge Lorrie Parker; and athlete representative Brittney Bottoms.

Kwan curtsied to the committee when the session was over, then went to await its decision.

That decision was exactly what she wanted to hear: Kwan is going to Turin.

"It feels awesome," Kwan said.

"When I first put in the petition I believed I would be 100 percent at the Olympics, and I still believe it."

The committee agreed.

"It is truly the opinion of this monitoring committee that Michelle could win the Olympics," Horen said.

I love Michelle Kwan. I hope that she finally wins her much awaited Olympic Gold medal. She has always been a trooper and gifted American athlete. I would love to see Kwan win the gold, Sacha Cohen get the Silver and Kimmi Meisner get the bronze. Go Michelle!!

I like Michelle too. Always have.

This her last chance for gold and she has to land every (triple) jump (combination).

I would love to see the American women bring home the gold, silver and broze.

Best of luck ladies! Go U.S.A.!

Used to having a drinking game when Dick Button did the play-by-play on the ice skating in the Olympics. Anytime he said 'nailed it' you had to take a shot. Anytime he said 'that is a tenth off' you took a shoot. Well, basically when ever he was speaking you ended up ingesting alcohol. Probably the only reason I have a liver left is that the Olympics is only every four years.

Funny!
Were you drinking aquavit?

The commentators drive me to drink, too, with their useless blabbing.
Got duct tape?

Lol! Kind of like the "Bob (Newhart) Drinking Game" in re-runs.

I'm just waiting for Dick to say something like:

1)"Oh no! She just did a triple axle and landed in the front row of spectators!"

2)"OMG! The blade just fell off her skate and hit someone in the top row. That's going to cost her a tenth of point. What a shame, well there goes her skating career."

"...that's too bad. Her costume completely fell off. That'll cost her a tenth of a point. She won't be on the podium this evening folks, so you can all go home."

Actually, Kwan was not the favored US Skater there.

AND..she had to go on a medical.....AND NOW WE HAVE SEEN IT WAS A MISTAKE>

The girl who qualified in comp...is snowed in.

Uberoth and the committee screwed the pooch with their little PR based decision.
