Tobey Maguire will be back -- in black -- for "Spider-Man 3."

Sony Pictures released Friday a teaser poster of Maguire wearing a black Spidey suit for the next installment in the blockbuster film series.

Targeted for a May 4, 2007, release, the film stars Maguire, returning for another spin as Peter Parker/Spider-Man, as well as Kirsten Dunst as Mary Jane Watson and James Franco as Harry Osborne.

Sam Raimi is also back to direct his third Spidey film.

The studio announced previously that Thomas Haden Church and Topher Grace would be playing villains in the film. Sony said in October that Church would be playing Spider-Man's nemesis Flint Marko/Sandman.

Other cast members reportedly will include Bryce Dallas Howard as Gwen Stacy -- Parker's love interest in the comics.

The films are based on the Marvel comic book heroes created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko.

The first "Spider-Man" made $403 million at the North American box office while its first sequel, "Spider-Man 2," webbed $373 million.

Tried watching the first one twice but fell asleep both times. Channel surfed past SP II. And now they have a III?

I didn't see either of them. There are FReepers who enjoy this kind of genre. I'm curious to hear what they say about this alleged change of color in Spdey's suit.

It will be tough to pull off. The black costume saga was great comics, but there is no way that they will be able to properly tell the story in the movie. Anyone who wants a synopsis, let me know...JFK

Wasn't the black suit actually the symbiote that became Venom?

Yep. And Eddie Brock (Venom) was mentioned in Sp-M I, so it is a possibility...JFK

Saw both of them; they're household favorites.

Especially the bit in the second movie where Spidey keeps saving everybody but can't make a steady paycheck. Been there, done that!

P.S. Kirsten Dunst.

Kirsten. Dunst.

To do it right they'll have to do the whole Beyonder/Secret Wars saga. If they attempt that, I'll be tryin to poke my eyes out with a spork.

Thomas Hayden Church as Sandman is a SUPERIOR choice! I've always been impressed by the casting choices in this series, with the noteable exception of James Franco as Harry Osborn. The villians have all been interesting actors, not just the flavour de jour (i.e. Colin Ferrell).

You can see the new poster at IMDB. I would post it but it is a gif and for whatever reason those won't post. I have heard that Topher Grace is playing the guy who becomes Venom. He isn't the main villian but the wheels are set in motion for him to be the bad guy in the next one. I'm sure that is why the suit is here now.
