Cat to Reunite With Owner After 10 Years

Wed May 3, 9:09 PM ET

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Sneakers the cat is being reunited with his owner, hundreds of miles away from where the feline disappeared in 1996.

The long-haired black cat was given to Sacramento's Animal Care Services last week, where an employee scanned him for a microchip, a routine procedure.

The number on the chip was used to track down Allison MacEwan of Seattle, who said she placed newspaper ads and went door-to-door with fliers in a futile search for her lost cat a decade ago.

Officials on Wednesday said they aren't sure how the cat wound up in Sacramento.

MacEwan's daughter was 4 years old when her cat disappeared, and officials said she is now looking forward to being reunited with her childhood pet.

Anyone want to bet that the cat dies within a few weeks of being reunited with its former owners?

My first thought as well. On the one hand, it's a happy story, but on the other, they are getting their cat back just to watch it die of old age.

But if it were me, I'd be happy to get my kitty back under any circumstances.

It's not the number of our days that makes a life, it's what we do with them.

I've got a friend who has a cat that they have had for 21 years. They don't know how old it was when they got it, but it was full grown.

And I know several people who have cats of 15-17+ years and are still quite healthy.

Indoor cats obviously live longer than outdoor cats.

Why do I get a feeling that you're a cat person?

I'll cover that bet.
My last cat lived to be 20...

After 10 years, I am sure the cat has changed so much the family won't even know him. They have grown apart...

What is up with so many cats named Sneakers? I have known of at least 4 cats with that name.

IIRC, the record for a cat lifetime is 33 years old. Only the good die young. ;^)

Indoor cats obviously live longer than outdoor cats.

My last cat who lived to be 20 had all her siblings (outdoor cats) die all under age 7.

A word about chips. I wouldn't have a pet without one. If for no other reason than the humane society should not euthenize an animal without checking first.

But even with a chip, it helps either to not move too often, or to make sure the chip registry data is promptly updated.

lol. That's 70 cat years of separation. I really doubt the cat will be thrilled to see them...not that a cat ever gets thrilled.
