Calling freeper parents- Give advice on speech to HS daughter's prom date
5/13/06 | dukeman

My 17-year old daughter is going to her first prom tonight. The date seems to be a decent enough kid, although he's a little too much into love of his car. I'm looking for suggestions on a good "safety and respect" speech to be delivered to this young man. I've thought of taking out and sharpening my Dad's Korean war souvenir bayonet in front of him (just to focus his attention), but that may be too dramatic.

Suggestions?

When my daughter's dates arrived I always answered the door wearing my shoulder holstered .45 with no coat covering it. Never said much except what time she had to be home "SAFE".

She's now married to a former Marine, has two boys, and both she, and her husband, still go shooting with me a couple of times a month.

I'm glad I'm done with that dating crap. Good luck.

It never gets any easier. My daughter now lives 2,400 miles away and hangs out with airline pilots!

Well, I dated boys for a long time, and I've been married to one for about twenty years now, so I think I know something about how their little minds work. They're adorable creatures as long as you don't take them too seriously, and any girl who's been raised with a brain knows how to handle them.

"A teenage boy? He'll never be missed by anyone including his own parents."

Speak for yourself. I happen to have a very respectable and courteous son who will be reaching the dating age very soon. He gets these qualities from his father and any half way decent girl would be lucky to even date him! From what I've seen though...it's the girls who are the problem today, and it is they who should worry about moms like me!

if this is just a "date"...then it means nothing. If this is a potential boyfriend....then I'd throw the ball back in your daughters court....and tell the date, if he has any questions regarding code of behavior...to ask your daughter, she's up to speed on all your thoughts. My kids know precisely what my thougts are on all things, and they understand my expected mode of behavior outside of the house. I don't feel their "dates" are in anyway responsible for their decisions.

If the prom includes limo rides and school sponsored after prom party...then the don't drink and drive is covered by the fact they won't be driving.

That's good... you don't need a lecture. Smile... look him in the eye and say …“Have a nice time.”

And a Hummer H2 to transport something about the size of your body . . .

he'll probably think you have some serious issues if you theatrically sharpen a blade or clean a gun in front of him. you may want to consider a more conventional route that doesn't involve implied threats and intimidation if want his respect.

I had to ask my ex girlfriends parents permission to take her to the prom. And this wasn't the 1950's this was 2003.

Step One: Give the speech while you are cleaning your guns.

LOL!

My father seriously did this before.

Worked like a charm!

The car you called an old jalopy was a '67 Goat?

Sigh, women just have no sense of value.

Smile when you say that, mister.

Good for her parents. It might have embarrassed her, but someday she will know that her parents cared. I am sure that you are a fine young man, and took good care of her.

Our school was actually really good about Prom. The local parents association helped fund an after prom party at Navy Pier in Chicago, where we all went on a boat and cruised around. We didn't get home til 5 AM so nobody had any time to cause trouble or get drunk. It was a perfect way to deal with the normal prom problems.

I'd modify this only slightly.

It depends on the tattoo; why he got it, what it is, where it is.

If he has a tattoo of "Emily" on his arm, to memorialize his sister who died of cancer - that's nowhere near the mindset of a young man who gets curse words tattooed on his face.

Face metal? Take it out before you come to my door.

No manners? Get out of my house, and don't let the door hit you!

My husband had 5 tattooes when he started dating me; however, my family knew his family and heartily approved of him. My mother knew he was a good son to his widowered mother, and my father knew he was an honest, hard working, level headed young man.

We have been happily married for almost 13 years, with three darling children.

I'm not saying you shouldn't put strict criteria on your daughter's dates (we have one, and BOTH of us will be cleaning guns when her dates come to call!).

I always liked the bayonet idea. Yeah buddy, that's MY daughter and you best remember that, if you value your life...

Just showed my husband this thread. He says remember the line in the movie Clueless, "I've got a gun and a shovel, and nobody will miss you..."
