It should have been 2-1 Italy, with no OT.

You know few have mentioned this, but Italy was robbed, the player that was in the offsides position was not the one that scored the goal. Therefore the goal should have been allowed.

Materazzi must have said something really nasty to him. However, not an excuse for losing one's temper like that. I don't usually follow soccer, so my interest was snagged when someone mentioned to me that this is not the first time Zidane has done something like this... anyone know about any prior temper tantrums?

Ciao,

L'Italia doveva vincere 2-0. Il rigore era inesistente, ed il secondo gol era valido.

Auguri per la vittoria, speriamo che la quinta coppa non sara tra 24 anni!

Zidane has a well documented list of ugly attacks on others during games. This was no surprise to those who know his history.

Blue is the colour of the Italian Royals. Of course, Italy is a Republic, but when soccer started, it was a kingdom. Same with Germany - they were black and white, the colours of the House of Hohenzollern, the ruling House of Prussia. The soccer organisations were founded around 1900.

As for Australia: Green and gold are the national colours of Australia, as proclaimed by Sir Ninian Stephen, the Governor General of Australia on 19 April 1984. It is widely believed that the colours were chosen because they are the dominant colours of Australia's floral emblem, the Golden Wattle.

Wattle is the Australian common name of Acacia, e.g., Cootamundra wattle.

Calcio.

It sickened me how your countrymen BLOCKED TRAFFIC on 6th Avenue in Manhattan waving a FOREIGN flag and screaming in Italian (a language not meant to be screamed, per my Nonno).

Nevertheless, congratulations to all Italians on their victory over Les Bleus. Now we Americans can concentrate on baseball and (in a month and a half) American football.

A picture I can't see enough of.

Don't tell anyone, but I liked france's style of play better. They actually seemed to want to score rather than playing entirely to keep the opponent from scoring. If only it weren't france doing it.

Our household does not usually follow soccer, so when my 15-year old, who was watching, asked me who I was hoping to win, I had to ask who was playing. When I heard who the 2 teams were, I immediately told him to cheer for the Italians!!!!

Congrats and enjoy!

A hearty congratulations to a hardworking, tenacious Italian team. They were flagging toward the end, no doubt, but they held on despite the head-butts and the butt-heads. Their goalkeeper should have his salary doubled just for that beautiful save from Zidane's kick.

Salud!
