Because of PC, nobody remembers that, at the time, the joke was June Cleaver interpreting jive for a couple of black guys to a white stewardess...not that she said the dreaded "N" word.
I think it was both -- that she had what today would be called Street Creds and she used N the same way they do in the streets.
