(FOX NEWS) - Rabbi Marc Sack drank diet soft drinks, cycled about 70 miles a week, and limited sweets and he struggled with hunger, "a big issue for me was appetite control."
But when the weight wasn't coming off, he saw a dietitian who told him to stop the diet soda.
"that was a big surprise to me," said Sack. "I thought I was doing something great by only drinking diet coke, and she really caught me off guard with that one."
Jennifer Broder Katz is Rabbi Sack's food coach. She says artificial sweeteners like those found in diet sodas affect appetite for up to 12 hours, "it pushes us to overeat and then sneak that little extra candy or cookie later in the day." Katz added it increases the risk of being overweight
An American Diabetes Association presentation reported, over 1500 people were followed for up to 8 years. For every diet soda the participants drank, they were 65 percent more likely to become overweight and 41 percent more likely to become obese.
Even more shocking is that those numbers were worse than those who drank regular soda.
Katz said, "all my patients come back to me and ask oh my god how did i just lose 10 pounds? And soon as he stopped drinking the diet soda the weight started to fall."
Something that wasn't quite that easy for Rabbi Sack, "that was a hard thing for me to give up, I was drinking a few diet cokes a day." Now he's drinking water instead.
"I did not that gnawing feeling in the late afternoon or at 5 oclock when i was just waiting for dinner -- it made a big difference," said Sack. A difference for him of 25 pounds.

It all holds me well until around 7 or 8 p.m. If I break routine and have a diet soda with lunch instead, I'm always starving by 5 o'clock.
SIDENOTE: Who punctuated the article above? Didn't capitalize "God," and in an article with a Rabbi? Sheesh.
I have never gone in for "diet" soda, "lite" beer, "lo-fat" anything or any of the other diet scams. If you wanna lose weight, there's only one sure way - put the fork down, and walk instead of ride.
In an interview with a rabbi, it should be G_d.
I tried the same thing and rapidly lost 15 pounds - the only change I made was to cut out carbonated beverages in favor of water.
Drink water.
I am not so sure about the validity of this article. The statistics may and probably represent the differences between people who chose to drink diet pop instead of regular.
I cut out diet soft drinks (which means all soft drinks for me) a few weeks ago, to see if avoiding artificial sweetners made a difference in my joint pain. I tell you, I miss them! There is something about the carbonation that just makes drinks more refreshing to me. I also miss having something sweet, since I low carb, and now, without artificial sweetners....well...YIKES!

I drink 1-2 Diet Rites/day + 1-2 cups of tea, with 1-2 packets of Splenda and oatmeal for breakfast with 2 packets of Splenda. What about sugar-free gum? I chew a lot of that - is that bad for me too? I dunno, it seems like some of this stuff is fear-mongering.
So, it's not the Double Big Mac, Super-sized, extra value meal, it's the diet soda.
Fat people can no longer load their trays to over flowing and buy a diet soda to balance the meal? Bummer.
You could have Club Soda sweetened with a little orange or apple juice, couldn't you?
I have no idea really. I garbled up my diet so bad over the past couple of weeks, and gained about 6 lbs! So, Monday I went back on my low carb (minus the sweetners--and I did ALOT of splenda) and have lost 6 lbs (so I know it was fluid). My joints feel somewhate better (not 100% but maybe that never will be the case) but they always feel better when I'm on the induction phase of Atkins. I'm just tired of being THAT low carb....

I think club soda would be ok (I have not tried it) but I am afraid even the juice will make me crave sugar again. I know the "just put your fork down and exercise crowd" will probably say that's crazy. Oh well. ;)

What they don't point out is that soda has a lot of sodium in it. That always makes me hungry.
Mmm, well, good luck! I'm gonna stick with my splenda for now! I think my problem is really the exercising and maintaining portion control when I go out to eat.
While the message about drinking diet soda leading to weight gain and/or a craving for real carbohydrates may be essentially correct, the reason stated in the article may be incorrect. I'd guess that what is happening is that he was drinking diet soda sweetened with aspartame, which may cause the body to generate the same insulin response as a drink sweetened with real sugar. By contrast, sweeteners such as Splenda may not cause that response. So, it may be that he could have continued drinking diet soda as long as he switched to one that was sweetened with Splenda. (I am neither a doctor nor a nutritionist, so take anything that I say with a grain of, er, Splenda)...
I sweeten my Club Soda with vodka and lemon! LOL.
I strongly suspect that what you say is true.
Hmmmm vodka...... That would probably help the joint pain too! ;)

Food coach? People now need food coaches? That's too funny. Almost as funny, I'm sure, as hearing Ms. Katz explain the chemistry of how diet drinks affect the appetite for up to 12 hours. Good grief. Diet drinks don't make people fat. Consuming more calories than you burn increases your weight. Too many people are trying to assign blame to something other than the real cause.
Insulin facilitates the metabolism of carbohydrates. Diet Coke, with aspartame, contains 0% carbohydrates. It provides 0 calories. Pretty hard to stimulate insulin without calories.
I just lost 62lbs and I drank diet, caffeine free soda almost every day.
