Landis gives positive drugs test

Tour de France winner Floyd Landis has given a positive drugs test, according to his Phonak team. The American, who claimed victory in the Tour de France on Sunday, has tested positive for the male sex hormone testosterone.

The positive test came after stage 17 of the Tour, which saw Landis record an epic victory after collapsing on the final climb the day before.

Landis has been suspended pending results of his B sample analysis.

The International Cycling Union (UCI) announced on Wednesday that a rider had failed a doping test but would not reveal his name.

"The Phonak Cycling Team was notified on Wednesday by the UCI of an unusual level of testosterone/epitestosterone ratio in the test made on Floyd Landis after stage 17 of the Tour de France," said a team statement.

"The team management and the rider were both totally surprised of this physiological result."

Excuse me, but don't all men (real men, manly men, YES!) have testosterone in their blood?

Now that I'm "older", maybe I could use a little more.

Was this deemed an unusual level of testosterone in relation to the average French "man"?

He's a man. Why shouldn't he test positive for testosterone?

People should try to win legally--in sports, by not using drug enhancements. This goes for all sportsmen; until it is shown that Landis cheated, his name shouldn't be impinged upon.

Yes, maybe if Landis has too much testosterone, he could loan some of it to the men of France who seem to have none of it.

I think you're onto something. He probably just has more testosterone than the frenchies.

Which is why I don't trust this result one freaking bit. If he was going to cheat, why would Landis take a drug that is so readily and easily detectable? This sounds like sour French Grapes to me. Americans have been winning their race and they don't like it, not one damn bit. After watching the lengths they went to to smear Lance Armstrong, I don't trust any testing that these people do, not one bit. You can bet everything you have that if a frenchie or someone from any other country had won this thing there would not be so much as a peep about drug testing.

It is the amount that matters. If you have many times normal levels it is a red flag.

Why? The race is international, not between the United States and France, and although the United States and France have tense relations, France is far from the most antiAmerican country in Western Europe (that title could go to the Spanish and the Greeks, though Greece could only have been made a part of Western Europe so that Western Europe could grab some hold on having an advanced ancient history. in that case, the Spanish are probably the most antiAmerican Western Europeans).

The article points out that there could have been abnormal amounts of the hormone.

Mainly because us and France have a long history of teasing each other, that is all really. All in fun.

Plus, I agree with what others have said, we shouldn't rush to judgement until we know more about the test.

I'm with you. The very fact that they hounded Lance Armstrong unmercifully and without cause paints the Frenchies in charge as too prejudiced to tell the truth and too anxious to dis Americans.

Ahh.

British humor.

Read the whole article. Remembering that Landis was going for hip replacement surgery right after the Tour de France. The comments about the lack of testosterone in the french are spot on.

Exactly. If I am not mistaken, after days of physical exertion, testosterone levels go up in a man. This is nature's way of helping the body to repair itself ASAP. Go figure. The French must be reeling as another American has beaten them.
